Central Arkansas fans are saying there is more buzz around town about joining the ASUN. One person says it's a done deal, just waiting on an announcement.
Also hearing the possibility of the Louisiana Southland schools joining the ASUN as football only members later and the remaining Texas schools playing football in the WAC as associates. That would mean the Southland will drop football from the conference. (That's just rumor, nothing factual at the moment)

I ran across this article when doing a search on any updates in the media about the situation. FGCU Athletics turns 20: What will it take for the Eagles to add football? ...
“We have no interest in adding other sports,” athletic director Ken Kavanagh said, “including football.”
...
Kavanagh and university president Mike Martin have been blunt – football just isn’t feasible for the Eagles.
“It is very unlikely Florida Gulf Coast University will ever play intercollegiate football for several reasons,” Martin said.
The biggest reason is financial.
A 2010 study commissioned by the school found it would cost around $100 million for FGCU to add football, half of which would be for building a stadium. However, the facility would have to be off campus because FGCU has limited land and much of it is environmentally protected. ...
The Louisville Courier-Journal recently analyzed the NCAA’s published revenue figures and found that 98 percent of all FCS programs lose money. The median annual deficit for those football teams is $2.4 million.www.naplesnews.com/story/sports/college/fgcu/2020/11/30/20-years-fgcu-athletics-will-eagles-ever-add-football/6179296002/

I would think that football would help enrollment, that would offset some of the financial problems. But oh well... dont really matter... Good thing about it is, if they, or UNF for that matter, dont have football, the ASUN is way less likely to lose them.

The WAC announcement: The WAC appears back in football. The Western Athletic Conference, which hasn't sponsored the sport since 2012, will have a rebirth on the FCS level, as part of an Jan. 14 announcement planned at NRG Stadium in Houston, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. The report said the new football conference will start in 2022 and include current WAC members Dixie State and Tarleton as well as Southern Utah moving over from the Big Sky Conference and Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin joining from the Southland Conference. Several other FCS or Division II programs could be added in the coming months, and the long-term goal of the league is to elevate football back to the FBS, where current WAC member New Mexico State plays as an independent, the report added. Sam Houston State won 99 games during the 2010s decade - the second-most in the FCS to North Dakota State. WAC football grew to be a national staple for 51 seasons from 1962 to 2012 with members including the likes of Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Boise State, Hawaii, San Diego State and Wyoming. www.fcs.football/cfb/story.asp?i=20210106100746855258804

Central Arkansas won't stay in the Southland without the "Texas 4". That's no doubt why they've been looking at the ASUN. I suppose there's a chance they could change their mind and go to the WAC, but Little Rock (well, Conway) is much more southern than western. I think if they wanted to go with the others the WAC would accept them with open arms. The fact they aren't mentioned tells me they don't. Combine this with the article the TimesDaily ran a couple of days ago, which talked about President Kitts sending a memo to the faculty that the ASUN "could" be adding three regional teams... I think it's really happening. Whether football stays in the Big South or an eventual ASUN football conference, I don't really care. But the fact that we will soon be in a conference with both Jacksonville State and an old rival like Central Arkansas makes me pretty dang happy. This is really good news for our fans. Now we HAVE to put money into either upgrading Braly or building a new stadium, because trying to out-recruit JSU with what we currently have just won't cut it.

I am “whelmed”. I might be in the minority, but I would rather play as part of the combined ASUN/WAC schedule than the Big South, but I guess it is what it is. The truth is we probably have an easier schedule in the Big South.
I certainly wish we had heard information today about the 6th school (or more). I’m sure it will happen, but I don’t think the original plan was to have this one year partnership. Hopefully the future schools are just hammering out details before an official announcement.

Yeah, I'm not sure we have the horsepower to compete in that ASUN/WAC 7 this fall. It would be nice to really show out in our last year of the Big South and possibly even get a playoff bid. But, that's a lot of wishful thinking.

We are closer to competing at our level in football, soccer, and softball right now. Football only got drilled by BYU last year, but still made some great plays. We played BYU without our best defense player last year in Boykin and lost our starting DE early, still had some strong goal line stands only for them to toss a TD on 4th and goal. Offense with Price at back showed some pop, Qb’s threw it pretty well and our receivers do what they do...including Swann, most underused player, we have in that group.

We’ll see how things look against the Big South this fall. Liberty was without their starting QB when we played them. Of course, our starter got knocked out of the game early. It will really depend on how the lines play.
Spring Camp started today. Kinda wish we were playing in the spring Big South games.

It would’ve been nice to see how the team compared to other Big South teams. We played well enough in the games nobody expected us to win. Jacksonville State was really the best litmus test we had in the fall since we will soon have to beat them to win a conference title. We at least kept that one close, but this isn’t horseshoes we’re playing. Gotta start winning some games we aren’t supposed to at some point.

We better find a running game. Our defense played great last fall, BYU doesn’t count because well they had one of the best Qb’s in college football last year. No running game again equals no wins. Defense will not have an extra week rest during regular fall season. They will be wore out if offense can’t sustain drives and find balance. Mr Miyagy says key is balance. We find a running game we have balance in field and on scoreboard. No run no won...that is free. Our team needs the spring practice for the RE ps and chemistry. I am glad we didn’t play the spring, really would have set us back. Preparing for games only helps starters during part of the week and not as much as spring practice. Plus in the spring we wouldn’t be eligible for postseason yet...hoping that is a reality in the fall.

I would grade whole team performance at a C+ last fall... Defense did well, Offensively we need a running game. I really dont know if that was because of competition or our O-line.
The year before, we lost 2 games we shouldn't have, Hampton and A&M... I also think we should have beat Charleston Southern. So, if I remember correctly, we should have finished 3rd in the conference if we would have beaten 1 of those two Big South games...
Our biggest problem in my opinion, was lack of adjustment after half time, coupled with lack of a running game.
This fall, we should have beat Southern Miss. Again, lack of a running game and no half time adjustments aided in a Southern Miss loss. We had athletes on par at almost every position.
All this said because, I think the talent is there, but we need that win, or at least something for the players to gather the confidence to win the close game...
