TimesDaily article and Looney's comments make it seem like it's Held's job to lose. I would be OK with Held staying on as OC, but no way to hire him as HC.
Both Held and Looney see these three games as an audition as to whether Held will have the interim tag removed. Looney added Held has done a good job bringing along young offensive players for the Lions, such as freshman quarterback Noah Walters, freshman receiver Demarcus Lacey and sophomore tailback ShunDerrick Powell, who is in line to break a couple of more school records.
Held maintained he’s going to coach how he always does before adding he’s “not going to be crazy or off the wall,” to get the full-time role. He would, however, like to land it.
“I think this is a great place,” Held said. “I think there is a bright future here. My family likes Florence. I love the state of Alabama. There’s a lot of great people here. I love the school. I think this can be a successful program. There’s still a lot of work to do, in recruiting and player development and the things that come with turning a program around.

I have been thinking about how the next 2 games play out. If we upset Austin Peay and then best Tennessee Tech, we are are definitely showing hige strides of improvement. Held has been somewhere where D1 talent was recruited. He knows looking at this roster that we need some D1 players. I wouldn’t say no to him not knowing what he is going to do over the next few weeks. When he arrived with Associate Head Coach title it looked like the wall had some scribble on it. He gets a chance to show what he can do with this team. Same time I imagine he wants to upgrade some coaching deficiencies along with talent. Going to be an interesting couple of weeks folks. Hang on.

Before y'all get upset about hiring from within again, Held is a MidWest guy, I remember someone saying that's what we should get... TBH, His offense has impressed me this year and if he can find some discipline, FUNDAMENTALS and a new DC that can stop someone, I think it may be worth a shot.

I said we needed a Midwest guy, but someone with experience of winning at the D1 level and has experience of being a HC at that level. I am not a fan of promoting from within again. Would be just another lazy hire.

Pete Shinnick at UWF is a program builder who is 154-66 overall in NAIA and D2. He took over a good Azusa Pacific program in NAIA back in 1999 and they went to the playoffs in 5 of his 7 seasons. He started the program at UNC-P and was 9-1 in his second season and had them in the D2 playoffs by the third season there. UNA played them in the second round of the playoffs his last season there in 2015. UWF hired him away to start their program and we all know what he's done there. Playoffs in year 2, a national title in year 4, 7-1 this year so far. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Shinnick

One thing you notice is how bad Helds teams were in year one and the big leap they made in year two. He took over some programs at rock bottom and then at least got them to a winning record. I have no idea what Saturday will look like? Held was a defensive graduate assistant on UT national title team in 1998. He has seen what a good defense looks like……I can tell you I am more excited about going to Saturdays game than I was before the change.

I think it's a mistake if we don't at least see what guys like Shinnick, or Will Healy (based on what he did at Austin Peay), or even alums like AJ Milwee, Chip Long, Chip Lindsey, etc., feel about the job.
That being said, I think it's impossible to look at the situation with Held and NOT think that Looney brought him in with this type of scenario in mind. And that's not a criticism. I'm guessing there are some midwestern ties they share, so Held may have come highly recommended to Looney? His record stinks, sure. But Gene Stallings had losing records at most of the stops he made before coaching Bama to a title. So, you never know.
Regardless of what the team does over the next 3 weeks, if we simply promote Held and don't conduct a search, I will assume it's still a money thing. Maybe I'd forgive them if they announce a stadium plan at the same time. Maybe.

If I'm doing my math right, Held is one game above .500 if you drop the 1st season at his head coaching stops... Not impressed.
What I am impressed with is how good his positions was when he was a position coach or OC... The guy has a back for running backs, and that's what we had been lacking until he got here.
So I say that to say this, keep him (only) on staff. Hire Shinnik, give him at least 250k to START. Let him bring in the rest of his staff and start competing for championships...
Found out Held is here for free while Nebraska is still paying off that coaching staff...

Looney started with us officially on September 1, 2021, according to roarlions.com. Did he not have a hand in the Held hiring?
I have no problem with being wrong, but it seems he should've been involved in this one.

Like I said, I don't have much of an ego when it comes to being wrong, so I'm sure if you give me a few days I'll say something that is. It's all good.
