“Looney said UNA will immediately begin a national search to fill the head coaching position.“
That’s how the press release concluded. Let’s hope that’s the case and we thoroughly review and consider all applicants.
Your thoughts on potential new hires?

I can think of several coaches with UNA ties that may be interested and apply. We’ve discussed several of them.
Two former Lions who are now FBS coordinators are AJ Milwee and Chip Long. Great offensive players and obviously good offensive coaches. Long will likely be unemployed when GA Tech makes a hire.
I’d think that Cody Gross might toss his name in the ring. A legendary player and former UNA OC under Wallace. His records at Athens have been up and down.
Then, there’s the dream team of former UNA coaches at Gulf Shores High. Hud and Edenfield could come in and save the day like they did after the Hyde era.
Who else?
Of course, we could be all surprised with a hire completely out of left field. Looney obviously has a lot of ties we have no clue about.

I hope somehow we can pull someone with experience, that can recruit and understands the transfer portal! Y’all don’t laugh at me, I have been thinking about who I would go after if I was the AD!! This would be my list!
Steve Spurrier JR, Miss State WR Coach
Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, Auburn RB Coach
Chip Lindsey, UCF OC, played at UNA in 1992-93, from Madison.
Chip Long, Georgia Tech OC/Tight Ends coach
Steve Campbell, former head coach at Delta State, Central Arkansas, and South Alabama. Currently an Assistant coach at UMS Wright.
Hudspeth/Edenfield, Gulf Shores High School
Bryan Harsin will be free in a few weeks and will be able to take a pay cut, lol!!! Joking

It'll probably be someone that Looney has ties to from his Missouri days

Chip Lindsey, yes! I knew I missed someone. He was mediocre as the Troy HC but maybe he wants a shot in FCS.

I would expect the athletic director has been keeping an eye on a few coaches. I wouldn’t expect us to make this move without having some potential replacements in mind. I am looking forward to seeing the names that will be mentioned. We are an attractive job. The cupboard is not bare. A few transfers and this team can compete next year. First job will be to keep Shun D, Lacey, Walters, and Harris. Hope we have the hire before the first signing period is complete. Would be nice to have the coach by December 15th.

I just saw this and wanted to drop in and wish you guys good luck in the coaching search. Now don't go get someone that is going to win in week 1 next year but after the UTC game, I'd be fine if they won the A-Sun!

As a fan base I think you have to be realistic to what the pay is going to be. If it is not a significant pay bump from what Willis was making then you can cross off any P5/G5 coordinator and most position coaches regardless of ties to the university. More than likely you are looking at D2 head coaches, FCS Coordinators, maybe a G5/P5 position coach. The stadium announcement certainly helps. If you could bump annual salary to $200K-$250k with a good pool for assistants you could probably get some nice candidates. That is a huge IF knowing UNA's fundraising issues.
Chip Long could be a candidate as I imagine he has gotten his last P5 coordinator job and he probably sees his window to be a HC closing. I am sure Chip Lindsey could be interested even though that doesn't excite me. If it were up to me, My first call would be to Will Healey.

Walters will be interesting for sure, since I'm sure Held was recruiting him while he was still at Nebraska. That being said, I do feel like the offense has made some improvements this year. I wouldn't necessarily be upset if he is retained. Though again, if there's a better option out there, you can't keep a coach just because he MIGHT help keep some of the players.

Football is different, but given Looney's track record of hiring, he may go after someone that has no ties to UNA. I honestly believe that is the right move. Hiring someone with connections opens up the "buddy" system and we are hiring friends of friends again.
I would like to hire someone from Midwest that can recruit there and south east. The talent in the FCS that have been winning the big games (FCS Championships) has come from the Midwest. The Southeast recruiting gets dried up very quickly due to so many P5/G5 options in the south.
