Great stuff, Brandon. So the ASUN returns to being a southeastern Olympic sport conference, with emphasis mostly on the I-75 corridor. The hybrid WACSUN will handle all football, likely with its own commissioner or board or what have you (I'm not sure how single-sport conferences are generally run). I think what the ASUN accomplishes is having a pretty good footprint of schools IF the football schools do eventually break away to be an all-sports conference with the WAC-7. Which I can certainly see happening down the road when FBS money has infused some extra cash and allowed travel budgets to rise sufficiently. My interpretation of how the football thing will work is, you will eventually have a representative from both the ASUN and WAC run the football side. Was also told, the football only conference is not like what we imagined, meaning, in order to play in it, you HAVE to be a FULL member of either the WAC or ASUN. So, no, Army could not join just to play football... This is what they are pitching to the NCAA to move to FBS. Instead of having a football conference that anyone who wants to play FBS football can join, it more like a single conference. You will be full members in one of the two to play football in the new football conference. That's what will prevent any conference from moving up. As of right now, it seems to be looking positive.

Just to put this out there, do yall remember when we was exploring D1?
We had 3 target conferences, OVC, SoCon, Sun Belt.
Why did we have Sun Belt knowing we couldn't go straight to FBS?
What was not made public is, the overall goal is to go FBS. At the time, the Sun Belt was our starting FBS goal. The AAC was our overall goal. I know it sounds far fetched, but shoot for the moon, right.
Knowing that, it's no surprise to me that this is going on, everyone involved has FBS aspirations including UNA. JSU moving has forced our hand quicker than we wanted.

As of today, getting word that Tampa is also on the hook... So far I'm hearing UWG, LMU, and Tampa If so, they would replace JSU, Liberty and KSU. How is UWG going to come on board to a conference that's about to transition to FBS? That will be interesting.

Maybe if they join while the conference is still technically FCS, they can skirt the rules? Or maybe the NCAA just gives them a waiver, since rules don't seem to matter much anymore.

Maybe they would stay as an FCS Indy until they got through the transition.

Maybe they would stay as an FCS Indy until they got through the transition. It would be relatively easy as long as the Western Atlantic Football schools schedule them.

I don't think they are looking for strictly football schools anymore since they are combining with the WAC for football... It's getting weird with everything I'm hearing... it's almost like something big (good or bad) is about to happen.

From the article: The addition of Luck provides the aspirational group a credibility boost, as he has done everything from finish as a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship while a star quarterback at West Virginia to play for the Houston Oilers. He's also a lawyer who worked as the CEO of NFL Europe, the president of the Houston Dynamo of the MLS and commissioner of the XFL. He's currently the chairman of Altius Sports Partners.

From the ASUN release: "We have 10 presidents with the same goal - to elevate our institutions through outstanding academic programs, world-class faculty and staff and ALL of our Division I sports, including our historic football programs competing and winning at the highest possible level of competition and recognition," said Eastern Kentucky University President David McFaddin. "With Oliver Luck's leadership, we have added an important piece of that equation. This is an exciting time for our schools, our conferences and for the overall growth and strength of both the ASUN and the WAC." asunsports.org/sports/fball/2022-23/releases/20230105d8sjt0

I’m almost convinced the NCAA has already laid out goals for the WACSUN to meet on the way to moving FBS, and that the schools all expect those goals to be met. Otherwise, it will be incredibly embarrassing to be making moves such as this today without any kind of payoff. We’d be the laughing stock of both the FCS and the FBS.
