Atlantic Sun With a new head coach, University of North Alabama is ready for its Division I moment The Lions will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference. By Mitchell Northam@primetimeMitch Apr 23, 2018, 5:45am PDT www.midmajormadness.com/2018/4/23/17264058/new-division-1-university-of-north-alabama-lions-tony-pujol-asunA little info on new Lion, Kevin Ndahiro 6-9 235 power forward. I hope he's one of the ones who will be staying. Had offers from Arizona State (visited), Bradley(visited), Florida State(visited), Tennessee(visited), Washington(visited), Florida, Oregon and Wake Forest. Stetson was terrible so maybe a fresh start with a team full of excitement about moving up will inspire him.

Decent article, but man, it would be nice if journalists would not half-ass their research sometimes. "Their football team has been really good lately" - no mention of our championships, and didn't even mention the championship game appearance from two years ago. But the kicker, "the men's basketball team doesn't have a ton of historical success" . Yeah, let's just not mention the fact we're the only school from the state of Alabama to win a basketball national title, and we've done it TWICE. I realize you can't expect much when the writer probably wasn't even born in 1991, but it's not very hard to find a trustworthy source. I was a journalism major at UNA for about 30 seconds, so stuff like this just grinds my gears.

It would have been nice to have mentioned our championships but the further away, in time, you are from them...well the less relevant it becomes to the current situation. How many people remember or care about all of the Football National Championships (and there were several) won by the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers back in the 30's. Don't get me wrong, I am proud of our National Championships still have and wear my 25 year old sweatshirt from the 1993 Football Natty days. There is no other school, in this state, that can compare with the variety of National Championships we have earned over the years. The past championships may help some with recruiting but I think the further removed you are from them the less impact. All that being said, it also grinds my gears that there was no tip of the hat for being runners up two years ago in football. This particular journalist probably would have mentioned it if we had been runner up in basketball. "ROAR LIONS"

I agree that there's a lot of "what have you done for me lately" sentiments when it comes to sports. I guess maybe the 90s still don't seem like THAT long ago? But as for this article, since it was written as sort of an introduction to who we are, I feel like those titles we won are VERY important. People unfamiliar with us need to know what we have accomplished, because that defines who we are. We aren't a school just happy to be moving to D1. We also expect to win games and championships in certain sports. We may not be North Dakota State when it comes to resources available, but I feel like we are lot closer to them than another team that recently moved up, Abilene Christian. And again, I think we should be proud of the fact that we are the only Alabama school to have won a championship in basketball. Yeah, we haven't been very good for a while now, but we still *expect* to get to that level again someday.

"ROAR LIONS" I agree, they could have mentioned the basketball championships, but I also understand why not much was mentioned about football, it's a basketball primary site. In my opinion, I think it's great publicity for UNA to just have their own artical on a very popular website, although I may not love the way it was written, it may cause thousands of people in the State, region and country to look for themselves and learn about the rich HISTORY of North Alabama athletics. I do love how they mentioned that we beat South Alabama and it will likely turn into a rivalry.

They also left out all the big wigs in the music industry who attended UNA and/ or taught there, George Lyndsey, Fred Dalton Thompson, Sergio Romo, Josh Willingham, Wimp Sanderson and dozens of other professional athletes.
I think the author is on the west coast.

Tony Pujol just cut every player on the team except Kendarius Smith and Kendall Stafford

Well. I guess the hard truth is, if they were only good enough to be middle of the pack in the GSC, they weren’t going to be any better in the ASUN. So short term pain for long term gain, I hope.

That's what I tried to explain to those "supporters" who attacked UNA for bottling Champaign. Most schools leave D2 with a bang due to using their impending jump to recruit D1 talent. The fact that we still stunk with all the advantages we had speaks volumes to me. Pujol wants D1 talent on the floor to play against D1 talent and so do I. Only the clueless would have preferred to keep a coach and players who couldn't even cut it in a watered-down D2 to get completely slaughtered in D1. Thank goodness we aren't following that path, the path I was so afraid we would follow. It would have been a disaster of monumental proportions.

I believe (from what I was told) he (Pujol) started laying down the law on how things are going to be treated differently from now on, work ethic, buying into a system and so on, and he had backlash from most the players. So as the leader of the team, the team he obviously wants to be successful, he put his foot down. Nothing any good coach wouldn't have done. He made an example.

Just found out the 6-8 power forward was actually on the team last season. That shows how much I followed that mess last season. It's probably a good thing he was axed too. Disgusting waste of 6-8 230 pound size.

As Brandon mentioned, Pujol gives off the vibe of being very organized and committed to doing things his way. I get the feeling there has been a lack of accountability and perhaps just downright laziness in our program for a few years now. Part of this may be Coach urging players to move on, but some may see the writing on the wall anyway.
Hopefully we help these kids find good landing spots in D2, maybe even the Gulf South.

If they find a team with an energetic, go-getter coach, they may end up being good D2 players. I think Champagne coasted so long that he will never be effective again.
