Maybe, maybe not. They were pretty strong last year losing only to UCF in the regular season. So 10-1. Did lose the AAC championship game to that same UCF team and lost the Liberty Bowl to Iowa State. Based on their location, they should be able to present a challenge to opposing teams every year. I think they just need to be able to maintain a stable coaching staff. I reckon, like a lot of lower tier teams (G5, FCS, D2, etc..), if you have a good coach its gonna be tough to keep 'em on the farm. I want to agree, but over the past 10 to 15 years, at least in my mind, there has been more and more competitiveness throughout D1 football. FCS (top tier) can play with anybody in the G5 and most of the P5. And only a select few in P5 are top tier. For 1 game, in this case, Memphis, you could see a great game, or even an upset. JSU took Auburn to overtime a couple years ago. FBS schools getting beat by FCS schools are happening more and more frequently. And I feel like it will be even more prevalent in the years to come. I also feel lime one day in the near future one of two things will happen, (A) the dissolve of sub divisions in D1. Or (B) the P5 decide they are even more unrealistically better than everyone else, they separate completely and the G5 and FCS combine for 1 division, and play for their own championship. With the kicker, nobody else can join a P5 conference. Mark my words on those scenarios. Agree about the competitiveness and I also think we can beat Memphis. This game is 4 years out but, if we have scheduling that encourages recruits to choose us during this period of no playoffs, we can have a good strong team. One of our calling cards, over the years, has been one of playing higher division teams and winning in many cases. No fear, and I hope that never changes. Regarding scenarios, I think B is more likely. My Pollyanna view is that all parties should be working toward the advancement of college football...strengthening the sport. The reality is the bigs are consolidating power (translated to mean chasing $'s) without regard to impact on the sport overall.

I am curious to see how much Memphis is going to pay UNA. And we all know, the P5 schools will probably pay more than the G5 schools will. But let's put money aside, from any FBS schools, who should you like to see UNA play?
My list is
South Alabama Troy UAB Vandy Southern Miss Kentucky West Virginia Texas

My list is South Alabama Troy UAB Vandy Southern Miss Kentucky West Virginia Texas If speaking strictly FBS,I agree with your first four: USA Troy UAB Vandy Then I would add: Auburn, hey they played Samford! Miss State, hey they have played Jacksonville State and Jackson State! Appalachian State Memphis- which we have scheduled Go ahead and throw in Southern Miss which you have mentioned. Would like to shoot high and throw in Bama but that ain't never gonna happen. Only state team they will play is Auburn...got to protect the home state recruiting ground. After having said all that, I really like what I'm seeing with our FCS OOC scheduling. Quality teams such as NDSU, Southern Utah, Western Illinois and Montana are the ticket. Would like to add: James Madison William & Mary Sam Houston Central Ark Idaho Citadel

I wouldn’t really schedule an ass whooping game. Like following some of these fcs teams in the state like aamu, they only are competitive in their conference play... other than that they’re playing teams that out right shalack them. Yes they’re getting paid to get beat, but at the same time, they’re volunteering a loss and risking a lot of their players to get hurt

Yes they’re getting paid to get beat, but at the same time, they’re volunteering a loss and risking a lot of their players to get hurt I agree. I think one thing to remember is a lot of FCS schools use an “ass whooping” game as a major source of revenue. So you have to strike a balance. I feel like we are fortunate in that we have good fan support. If we can average north of 10k fans/game, that’s better than a lot of teams in this division. Perhaps that will allow us to schedule mostly G5 teams that we can be more competitive with. I mean, I get the attitude of “let’s take on the best!”. And early in the season (September), when most of your starters are healthy, yeah, a lot of FCS teams can stand toe to toe with some P5 teams. What I don’t really want to see is us playing an SEC team in that late November spot, where the team is beat up and doesn’t have multiple 5-star recruits backing up at each position like Bama or Auburn do.

You HAVE to go for a big score every now and then. There's a BIG difference between $15,000 and three or four hundred thousand. Those little payouts will NOT get us to where we want to be. Some people are under the mistaken impression that the players don't like playing somebody like Auburn on REAL TV in a big, beautiful stadium in front of 80,000 people. But that's not true. Any competitive athlete LIVES for that chance. It could be a once in a lifetime thing so it would also help recruiting.

On the flip side, I don’t want to see all of our out of conference games all money games. It won’t get us any better and believe it or not, many players don’t want to just play in a game they know they don’t have a fair shot to win in. Yes it’s good exposure and the atmosphere is great, but is it worth a blow out and embarrassment?

I just hope we didn't move up and plan future budgets completely based on these supposed "money games". I think the Big 10 has already decided to stop playing FCS teams. What if the other conferences decide to do the same?
Now, if we schedule a "name team" every 3 or 4 years? I can live with that, though like I said, I'd prefer for us try to schedule them in early September so we do have a better shot at winning. A few years ago Charleston Southern, ranked something like #2 in FCS, got absolutely hammered by Alabama the weekend before the Iron Bowl. Whether the game "counts" towards your own division or not, that can't be a confidence booster going into the playoffs.

The Big 10 (I hate that name, you would think they would be like the PAC and learn to count) has redacted that and are playing FCS schools and said they will continue to do so. I know some coaches and AD have said they need to play the FCS games to give their fans that can't normally afford the (illegally) higher priced tickets. Example- Alabama/LSU tickets can run 150 to 200 dollars a peace and the face value is 45. On the flip side Alabama and Charleston Southern will be 45. As for UNA, the Athletic budget will increase in increments during the transition. And will not be impacted by "money games". The "money games" will go to support athletic facilities, and bonuses for things such as, getting into postseason play.

I almost felt like that information about the Big 10 had changed, but I wasn't sure. I should've looked it up before posting. And I agree that it can be beneficial for the FBS schools/fans, too. The last SEC game I went to was 8 years ago now, and I paid $150 for just one ticket. I can't justify that, even though I love watching football in person. Now that I have a wife and kid I can't imagine how expensive a single game would be. I just hope we can find a happy medium somewhere. Since I live here in Chattanooga, I see the Mocs schedule a yearly SEC beatdown. I just don't want that for us. It's painful to lose, even understanding the circumstances.

Since I live here in Chattanooga, I see the Mocs schedule a yearly SEC beatdown. I just don't want that for us. It's painful to lose, even understanding the circumstances. You just have to be smart about who you schedule. It seems we are taking the NDSU approach, and I like it. They don't usually schedule the best FBS schools, they usually schedule the ones they match up with better. They don't always win them either. I (unlike some) don't think playing Alabama is a good idea. They wouldn't anyway, but they will play Chattanooga. I would rather play Vandy for half the money and an opportunity to win. Memphis has been good lately, but that's not historical. Coaching changes drastically affect a G5 program, so who knows how they will be in 2022? The best thing for UNA at this point going forward is FANS.... Show up, let's give other schools a reason to dred playing in Florence, and give the Prez a good reason to build a new stadium. I would love to see an average home game this year be 9k+ and with only D2 schools. By the end of the transition, I would like to see sold out average. If that was to happen, no doubt there will be a new stadium in no time. But it's on us, we have to help sell the program, we have to show up when we can. The University can only market so much, it is up to the Fans themselves to create the Buzz that brings people to the games, that being said, I take it that nobody wants to have a tailgate area for the forum members?
