We've had threads on this topic before, but the older ones have been pushed down and were getting several pages long anyway. So, I hope it's ok if I can start a new one here.
As y'all might remember, I get pretty fired up discussing how we have really minimized gold on our uniforms the last several years. Around the time the new logo set was introduced, the talk was that the University was attempting to standardize what shade of "gold" would be used for both academics and athletics. The "old gold" coloring disappeared from all uniforms but wasn't really replaced. There have been some hints of what I will call yellow-gold here and there, such as the sleeve trim on the football jerseys, and that shade has been used in graphics on social media. While this was the same shade as what the academic side has been using, I recently noticed both the Facebook and Twitter/X account profile photos for the University itself have dropped gold and now just have the standing lion logo in purple and white. So were athletics REALLY waiting on the academic side? Have academics dropped gold now, or are in the process of trying to?
Meanwhile, men's basketball has seemed to enjoy wearing the throwback Florence State unis, which of course have purple letters with yellow gold trim. But the three main uniforms are purple, white, and black. Our softball program was probably one of the first to completely abandon gold, and that is still holding true for this year it seems. The uniform combinations I've seen are again purple, white, and black. Baseball seems to be purple and white (and grey for road unis, if we want to count that). To be fair, women's basketball has some gold trim and has probably used gold the most in their social media graphics. But they're the outlier.
Another frustration? Go to shopunalions.com and see how much merch you can buy in purple and gold. You won't have an easy time of it. There are ZERO caps in that combination. In fact, not a single one for sale has any gold. I'm a guy that enjoys wearing hoodies in colder weather. Think they have any in purple and gold? Nope.
I know for some this isn't a big deal. Maybe I shouldn't let it bother me as much as I do. But we all know that college is a nostalgic time of life. Every time I see a UNA team in purple and white (or black, ugh), it's almost like it's a different school than the one I grew up attending games for and eventually earning a degree from. And while being nostalgic over a color is maybe silly... hell, REMOVING that color is even sillier. There's simply no good reason for us to abandon one of our two school colors.
I'm just a guy living three hours away who doesn't get to attend many games, and whose money mostly goes to my two kids instead of the University. They probably don't care much about my opinion. So please, y'all keep letting anyone you come in contact with that we want to see gold brought back. The purple and gold are here to stay, not the purple and white or black. Maybe if they hear from enough angry folks something will change.
