Hate to show my ignorance, but where was McCarter previously? Hate it for Coach Champagne, but I’m really proud the University acted here. They could have rode out the majority of the transition period allowing us to continue to tread water (or most likely, worse). It’s time for new blood. My first choice would be an Andy Kennedy/Mark Fox or even Mark Gottfried type, but I realize those choices may be a bit unrealistic. Certainly wouldn’t hurt to at least try. Otherwise, go for a young assistant whose ready for his first job. The kind of guy that will want to prove something. I’m not sure if he’s ready for a head job, but Antoine Pettway at Alabama is a guy who is pretty well known in the state and has recruited well for Bama. He has a likeable personality and I could see him bringing in some talent we might not get otherwise. You’d probably want to find a strong Xs and Os guy to be his “second in command”. Thought this was an interesting mention and then saw that he makes $275K being an assistant at Bama. www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/sports/college/alabama/2017/12/12/contract-details-alabama-mens-assistant-coach-revealed/946463001/Yeah, hard to compete with SEC salaries. You might have to sell a guy like that on taking a pay cut to advance his overall career. And load the contract with bonus opportunities.

I'm pretty shocked by this but very happy. Coach Champagne is a good guy but we need new blood. It is very assuring that UNA would make a move. Now let's see who we can sway to make a winning program and compete not only in conference but nationally.

I wonder if Scott Sanderson will be interested? He is the head coach at Faulkner. Previously head coach at Lipscomb, brought them from NAIA to the A-Sun and won 2 A-Sun championships.

Missy Tiber. We are in a new world now where success isn't winning, it's "diversity." I hope we never become the kind of school who will do something dumb to make a PC statement.

If they can get him, how much are they paying? We should be able to get a quality coach.

I also don't want to hire a bald retread just because they've coached on the D1 level but went 4 and 93. We need a tire with plenty of tread!

Since UNA waited a year to make the announcement, maybe they already have someone in their sites. No offense but I don't think promoting someone from a failing staff is a good idea.
Rick Stansbury, 52. Did a good job at Mississippi State. Now an assistant coach.
I think my main target would be Darrin Horn, 41. Great at Western Kentucky. Maybe got in over his head too quickly at South Carolina. Working as an analyst at espn since. Sometimes a couple of years away is just the right medicine for a young coach who failed his first big test. UNA may be a stepping-stone but then again, maybe not.
Both coaches are still relatively young and dirt-free. They should at least be contacted.

I would be very happy with a guy like Horn. Sometimes coaches are just better suited for the mid-major life, where you have to focus on coaching up guys that may be D1 talent but not necessarily NBA talent. And to be fair to him, South Carolina has been a tough place to win in almost any sport, historically. He did very well at WKU. I really, really hope this is an actual search (if the University doesn’t already have a candidate lined up). I have thrown around the word “lazy” for hiring Coach Willis, but in their defense, at least he was a guy who had been here through three tenures of pretty darn successful coaches. It’s a lot easier to “maintain” than to build up. We need a builder in basketball, one that understands how challenging this will be for a few years. If we go and promote from within I’ll be pretty disappointed. That L word might be appropriate again.

If they do hire from within, I would hope they post a list of applicants that were interviewed so we can compare, if they do that, and hiring from within was clearly the best choice, we can't complain.

I trust Linder to make a great hire. He did hire Ashley Cozart after all. Also, the school used the words "contract not renewed". Is that the same as being fired?
