So tired of baseball and softball getting to conference play and just getting whooped. Hope we are able to recruit some D1 players soon. As we continue to get smoked and have a terrible record to prove it, recruiting will get harder. What player will listen to a coach who can’t win or get close to winning a conference game? Unfortunately the Spring football game is over, not much to see until we land a couple of football transfers or rumors of a stadium happen.

Baseball had a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 7th. Keehn decided this was a good spot to use a catcher to make his first ever pitching appearance. To no one’s surprise, UNA immediately gives up 2 runs and loses another one by 1 run. Back to back 1 run losses in games that UNA led late. Beyond time for a change. Even if his contract isn’t up, Looney has to make a move I’d assume.

Lions playing at Ole Miss today. I think we have a better winning percentage against SEC baseball than ASUN... Lol

Would think Willingham gets ticked off seeing his alma mater suck on level most vacuum cleaners hope to reach. At least after 4 innings you realize there isn’t a reason to watch or listen….so there’s that. I do not expect to beat SEC teams on a regular basis, but we should be competitive. Lose by 5 runs that’s respectable. Heck we lose in our own division by more than 5 runs. Pitchers must be hard to evaluate and develop at this level. Here’s to looking forward to our new coaching staff….

I am a UNA baseball alum who has recently graduated. Though every single player may not be a division one caliber player (I sure wasn’t), there is still a lot of talent on this team. This talent shouldn’t win just ten games a year. The coaches are not getting enough criticism in my opinion. One coach, who I will not call out by name, is very toxic and likes to put blame on solely the players. At the mid major level, player development is the most important thing since big time recruits scarcely come to a non power five school. There is ZERO development in this program. Actually, I felt that I got worse in the years I was there. Hitting the ball on the ground and trying to scratch three or four runs a game is not going to translate to wins. The pitchers are coddled and are never pushed. The players are still forced to condition every single day and regularly run full speed sprints on concrete (which leads to injuries every fall). There has to be a change in leadership if any progression wants to be made. I feel bad for the players still there, because I know they are miserable.

And thanks for sharing this. I made one of the comments about having D2 caliber players, so let me say again, I didn’t mean any disrespect by that. I’ll be the first to admit a D2 player is way more talented than I ever hoped to be. But if we DO have players that maybe can’t compete with D1 teams, I think a lot of what you’re saying illustrates why. Obviously this coaching staff has lost the ability (if they ever had it) to develop players’ talents or a winning culture. I’m guessing that is hurting recruiting, as well. North Alabama has some great high school baseball programs. We shouldn’t struggle THIS much to put together a decent roster. And like you said… perhaps the roster is there, and the coaches are just letting us down. When you mention running on concrete… is that a facilities issue, or an intentional decision made by the coaching staff? What on earth could be the benefit of running on concrete? I hope someday soon baseball gets the coaches and investment in the program they deserve. College baseball is on the rise, and it would be nice if we don’t sit around and react to what others are doing for once.

The idea that UNA doesn’t have enough talent to even win 10 games isn’t accurate. As an example, they have 2 pitchers (Haberstock and Emener) who will very likely sign professional deals down the road. Both sit mid 90’s (and Emener is left handed). I’m not saying they have the talent to compete with Liberty and FGCU, but they have a good enough roster to at least be middle of the pack in the back end with teams like Bellarmine, Central Arkansas, Lipscomb, etc…
I would expect an immediate boost if/when a new coach is hired.

I agree, I've always thought we had talent. Just extremely inconsistent and that has to do with coaching.
If we can win games against Ole Piss (not this year), Alabama, Cincinnati, then we have plenty of talent. The only thing I see lacking is coaching talent.
Hopefully Looney sees that and is about to give the whole staff the boot, soon.

Just surpassed last years win total, and have wins over Alabama, Cincinnati, and Memphis. No doubt they’ve improved. Hopefully they can finish strong the second half of the season as the young guys mature.
