One of those revenue streams is game guarantees. The Lions will receive $130,000 for Saturday’s season-opening football game at Southern Utah and $230,000 for the game at North Dakota State on Sept. 15, Future guarantees for football games include Montana in 2019 ($225,000); BYU in 2020 ($425,000) and Memphis in 2022 ($325,000). Men’s basketball has brought in several big paydays, including $95,000 to play at Gonzaga on Dec. 28.
“Getting the game guarantees early on were so big,” Linder said. “We were not expecting game guarantees in football this year, nor were we expecting much in basketball. For this first year I was expecting around $80,000 for men’s basketball into the budget and the last time I talked to coach (Tony) Pujol I think the basketball game guarantees are $420,000.”

This article seems to confirm something I had thought about, and even mentioned a time or two on the board. For a team just transitioning to D1, it seems we are signing on for games with a LOT of top-notch schools.
For football, I can understand it. The football people in FCS know our tradition I’m sure. The NDSUs, Montana, etc., respect our program and don’t see us as just another D2 team moving up. I think schools with rich traditions just gravitate towards one another.
Basketball has surprised me the most though. I don’t know if Coach Pujol is just THAT well connected or what, but he really seems intent on putting our name on the map. We might get beat by 40+ in a few of these games, but that money will hopefully help lead to better things down the road.

Better to take some beatings now for big money than to take beatings at the hands of low level D1s for very little money.
The good thing about basketball is on a given night, you can come out on fire, in a zone where the basket seems to be 5 feet wide and Goliath can't hit the broadside of a barn. That may not happen but the dough will. It probably would be better to give these teams a really good game without beating them. We played several D1 games in the 80s. When we finally won one, routing Big Dancers, Murray State, we never received another invite.
