Is there any chance we would make a run at Coach Houston Nutt? This Coach Willis experiment is gonna end soon. Nutt has coached at the highest level of college football but obviously he hasn't coached in a while but could factor in getting him for a good price. He coached at the 1-AA level at Murray State early in his career, so he is familiar with the division. Just a thought....
Murray State
In 1993, Nutt received his first head coaching position at NCAA Division I-AA Murray State University. The team went 4–7 and 5–6 in Nutt's first two years.
In 1995, his efforts paid off with an 11–1 record and an Ohio Valley Conference championship after reeling off an 8–0 conference mark. Nutt received Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors and was recognized with the Eddie Robinson National Division I-AA Coach of the Year Award.
Nutt repeated his success for the 1996 season with an 11–2 record and another undefeated run through his Ohio Valley Conference schedule. Murray State won its first round Division I-AA playoff appearance, earning Nutt the OVC Coach of the Year honors and regional Coach of the Year honors.

I just don't think we have enough information yet to make a good judgement of Coach Willis. But let's be honest - he can probably go 3-8 this year and keep his job. Anything worse than that and things get dicey, but I doubt the administration wants to make that change yet. He is working in a situation that 99% of head guys never experience.
I'll pass on Houston Nutt, even if an opening comes up at the end of the year. The Bowden experiment soured me on wanting to go that route again.

Damn dude, let's give Willis a chance. I'm trying too, but it's just not gonna work out IMO. We pulled the trigger a little to quick on a guy with 0 Head Coaching experience (not even on a high school level)

I get what you are saying, but I think Houston Nutt and Terry Bowden are 2 totally different personalities and we are now on a bigger level than D2.

I like Nutt (from the little I know of him) more than Bowden, and it does seem like at his age we would be a final stop. I still don't understand why Bowden used us a springboard to Akron, of all places. But I guess that's a whole different conversation. I just prefer a fiery, younger type. Honestly I have my issues with Mark Hudspeth, but *as a coach* he was the perfect fit for UNA when he was here. I'd like to have that type of coach again. I'll give Willis some more time. That's as long as I don't see him walking around campus in overalls, as I did a certain other head coach who was a former defensive coordinator that Bobby Wallace recommended to follow him. Talk about not projecting a great image to recruits...

Y’all forget that last year we went 5-5 but also had 14 season ending injuries. Willis imo is a good hire, he just needs support from all lion fans and we’ll see how it goes. I liked the in house hire. Last year just wasn’t so great as his first year. Poor officiating, more injuries than anywhere I’ve ever seen in travel guys, and the guy still managed to make it to 3rd place in the GSC. He is a good coach and y’all just need to give him time

I think, with Willis, who he and his family wants to be here and call Flotown home(ask his wife of they want to go) we are fortunate to have him. He could he one of those FCS coaching legends that could have went on to bigger and better schools, but loved where they was so much they stayed. But, we will not know if there is no support.

Willis was a good hire. Give him a chance. This is a transition period that we are going through. Believe me, his plate is full for next few years.

He's not going anywhere for the next couple of years, for sure. No matter what his record is.
That said, this will be interesting because it's like all the other teams are getting a bit more hype right now because they are playing DI teams while football has a hodge-podge schedule this year with no conference. The big dogs are almost like the step-children this first season.

And basketball has been ignored by the athletic department for way too long. But all sports need to be well supported as much as possible. We have a real opportunity the next few years, they hopefully will not screw it up.
