Where the MEAC was wrong is enforcing a fine that was not in the conference rules or by-laws. Legally, I feel like that's extortion, if it would have been a rule or by-law, that's different. Yeah, Hampton should have handled it different, but i wouldn't put all the blame on Hampton. To my understanding, there were several schools in the MEAC that was 100% against the Celebration Bowl and wanted to continue to compete for National Championships, but they went against the stronger football schools. Obviously, the MEAC is not the right fit for Hampton anymore, for a HBCU school to want to leave behind a HBCU conference for any other conference is very telling. North Carolina A&T may very well be the next, and don't be surprised if they are in the A-Sun/ Big South deal.

Hmmm, that's pretty crazy. But, no doubt I'd want out if I was a school in any HBCU/Ivy conference that doesn't participate in the playoffs.

I have emailed the Ivy league a few months ago just to ask about the possibility of the Ivy league champion playing the highest ranked team to get left out of the playoffs in a bowl game. I was told that could be a possibility if we could find a sponsorship for the event. He also eluded to the possibility that the Ivy league have been in conversation the last couple of years about participating in the playoffs. He did not give details or a time frame.

There's definitely some bad behavior on both sides here. Hampton is upset with the limitations the MEAC has placed on them. That's understandable. They probably should have given the MEAC at least one more season and then part ways. Meanwhile I think the MEAC, or at least other conference members, are a little jealous and mad at Hampton for not "sticking with them". I don't pretend to know how HBCUs and their fans feel about this issue, but they still seem to embrace an underdog mentality. Hampton seems to want to break away from that, and who can blame them?
I think they're an interesting addition to the Big South. I love the state of Virginia. Hope to make some road trips up there for some Lion games.
