LORETTO, Tenn. — While he seldom gets rattled on the mound, Ryan Weathers admits he was a little flustered Thursday afternoon. The star pitcher at Loretto was at the high school when he was told his truck was being towed. As he went outside to investigate his father, David, walked from behind the truck and handed him the trophy as the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. “I was definitely surprised,” Weathers said. “I was here, supposedly for a photo shoot and then they tell me my truck was being towed. I was like ‘why is my truck being towed?'
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Weathers as the nation’s best high school baseball player. A national advisory panel comprised of sport-specific experts and sports journalists helped select Weathers from nearly 470,000 high school baseball players nationwide.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior left-handed pitcher, first baseman and outfielder, compiled a 10-0 record with a 0.09 ERA in leading the Mustangs (33-4) to the Division I, Class A state championship game. Weathers struck out 148 in 76 innings, allowing just 24 hits and 10 walks. At the plate, he posted a .434 batting average with 5 home runs, 31 runs scored and 26 RBIs. The 2017 Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Mr. Baseball winner, he won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2017 U-18 World Cup in Canada.
Past winners of the award include: Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, Zack Greinke, and Clayton Kershaw
He signed with Vandy but is expected to be drafted in first round. His old man, David, pitched for 19 years in the MLB.
