I saw where FGCU is expected to get a invite to the NIT.
What used to be the premier tourney, it still holds prestige. Unlike (From what I understand) the NCAA tourney, conferences don't get money from the NIT, but the individual school does for that year. So it will not directly impact UNA when another school getting a NIT invite, it does give our school and the Fans something to strive for even if we don't make the NCAA in the future.
Not sure how much is payed to NIT schools.

NIT and other tidbits.
In 1972 Alabama went 18-8 and didn't make the NIT. In 1973 they went 22-8 and didn't make the NCAA and had to settle for the NIT which was MUCH stronger than it is today. They lost a controversial heart breaker in the semifinals to eventual champs, Virginia Tech by one stinking point.
In 1974 they went 22-4, WON THE SEC with a 15-3 conference record and didn't get to play in EITHER tournament! Even more cruel for Alabama was sharing the SEC title with Vanderbilt, but losing both games to the Commodores in the last second sending Vanderbilt to the Mideast Regional in TUSCALOOSA, the Tide could only watch from the stands. Not only was Alabama unable to participate in the NCAA tournament, they were precluded from playing in the NIT (where Alabama made it to the semifinals prior year)as well as the new and short lived CCA tournament in St Louis, due to NCAA rules precluding a school which was hosting a tournament game to play in the NIT for among many reasons, concerns by the NCAA that with the host school in New York, the NCAA regional round on their home court may be poorly attended.
In 1975 Bama went 22-5, 15-3 while sharing the SEC title. Alabama was the SEC's first "at-large" team after the 1975 season. Alabama tied Kentucky for the SEC title but lost both games to the Wildcats by five points and was shipped to Tempe to play Arizona State where they lost by 3 in what was a home game for the scum devils while Kentucky was the SEC's representative and was placed in the customary Mideast Regional and played a first round game in Tuscaloosa, of all places.
In 1976 they left no doubt, winning the SEC outright with a familiar 15-3 record. They blew out a vaunted North Carolina team in the first round of the NCAA 79-64 as Leighton's 6-10 235 pound Leon Douglas made mincemeat out of the Tarheel big men as he poured 35 points and 17 rebounds on their heads. Considering he blocked 77 shots that season, I'm sure he had several in that game as well. That led to the game with Indiana. That Indiana team has been voted the greatest college basketball team of all time. The If big 10 officials hadn't been calling the game, strange huh, Alabama would have beaten them.

That post was to show just how degraded college basketball has become for numerous reasons. It's like the state tounament. If you have a pulse, you have a shot at getting in.
This will be helpful to UNA. Even the small group of traditional powers who've won almost all of the national championships aren't that good anymore. That gives everyone else a better shot at being more competitive if they can land a decent coach. We need to start trolling the waters NOW. If we find a good prospect, pull the trigger before somebody else grabs our target. Good things rarely come to those who procrastinate in sports

Like I said, not like it used to, but for Mid Majors, it's a big deal. I think the qualifications are (and I'm not entirely sure) 18 wins or better, a strong RPI, and regular season conference champs that don't get in the NCAA tourney. For anyone who thinks the NIT isn't a big deal, ask the players, coaches and fans who come up short in the NIT. The other tournaments like the CBI and various others, are a joke, even make the schools in them pay to be in them. And nobody cares about those tournaments, in my opinion. I would be more than happy with a few NIT invites, for us, at least it means we are competitive.
