I hope Champagne transitions to an off-the-court job and they make a "name" hire like Gottfried. Heck, I'm still ticked off that Bama fired him!

I wonder if Sanderson still has some coaching left in him?

I would rather have coach Acuff from UAH.

I think Mark’s attitude towards the job changed towards the end of his tenure there. I heard some things at the time, but I’d rather not talk about it here. It doesn’t really matter anyway. He may feel like we’d be too much of a step down. I’d pitch it as an opportunity to coach in a low-pressure situation and make himself marketable to big programs again. That would appeal to some people. Anyway, I’m not even so much asking for Gottfried himself, just someone that might move the needle a bit. We could get a coach with a proven record from a D2 school for example, or a hot assistant from somewhere. But maybe we need something different at this moment. Five years from now, our goals might be different.

I absolutely don’t want this to happen - McCarter to be promoted.

I absolutely don’t want this to happen - McCarter to be promoted. He was 45-61 in four years at West Alabama from 2008-2011. Had three winning seasons (barely) in 13 seasons at DI UTSA. Not what we need for DI.

I've been thinking about trying to contact him myself for the last month. Try to sell him on building HIS program from the ground up and try to stick it to Alabama and Auburn in recruiting. Remind him he would have the advantage of the largest, most up to date facility in the state. UNA is in a metro area of around 150,000 so someone of his stature could finally make the money flow. As far as recruiting, Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham and Huntsville are all well within the UNA recruiting area for him to harvest. It would be better if someone in the athletic department would grow a brain and get up the gumption to contact him.

Here’s a crazy idea. Heck, maybe TOO crazy, but we once hired Terry Bowden, so... Mark Gottfried is currently unemployed. Could we persuade him to come here? He knows this state, and was always a great recruiter, if not maybe the best Xs and Os guy. Maybe he would be interested in jump-starting a D1 program. He’s still relatively young, and I would have no doubts that he would use us to springboard back to a major job in a few years. But perhaps it could be a mutually beneficial situation. The downside is I’ve heard he has some... shall we say, indiscretions in the past. But I’ve heard rumors about some of our own past coaches... I have no idea if Mark is already doing something somewhere or even plans to come back to coaching. But at the VERY LEAST, if I were AD, I’d have a conversation with him. The last I saw he was a basketball commentator for one of the networks.

I bet he would consider UNA for a very short term. Making that kind of money, I doubt we could offer him enough to keep his lifestyle.

But if you’ve ever paid close attention, neither coaches can retain key players on their rosters for the next season. Mostly the men’s team 100% agree. It's fucking ridiculous how much roster turnover there is on the men's team. Every time I read an article by Jeff McIntyre on different players "not returning" next year, I wonder what the fuck did Champagne do to cause them to leave. You can also blame his penchant for recruiting junior college/D1 transfers more than high school seniors. You can't build a winning consistency when you rely mostly on guys who will stay 1, maybe two years, at the most. You wonder why Lennie Acuff and UAH is consistently successful year in and year out (except this year)? It's because he recruits mostly high school seniors. Huntsville and Madison County is a hotbed for high school basketball in Alabama and Acuff has easy pickings.

Acuff is more of a national recruiter which would be ok with me if that's what it takes to win.

Meanwhile, 15-15 DSU is leading UWF by 3 at the half after beating top-seed VSU two days ago. We'll see if they can pull off the Cinderella win!
