There has been speculation for a while now about the A-Sun sponsoring football.
I know it has been addressed with the A-Sun/Big South collaboration, but you have to think, the A-Sun has bigger plans.
What I think is most likely to happen is in the next few years, a few teams are going to be added with football. (This is just my opinion, non of this has been talked about by any parties mentioned)
I think with the departure of USC Upstate, the possibility of NJIT going to another conference and not wanting to lose KSU, the A-Sun will invite the following while the A-Sun/Big South thing is going.
Tarleton State UWF UWG
I also think that Stetson and Jacksonville will be persuaded to add scholarships. They will do it at the same time.
That will be 7 A-Sun football schools. Then I think after all the D2 move ups are done with the tensions, the A-Sun will sponsor football in the Conference.
All that may be enough to sway FGCU to start football, as well, and I could see another D2 Texas school invited afterwards. Also a Louisiana school out of the Southland after it has started.

The reason for the above is that the A-Sun knows that the only way it is going to survive in this climate is to take advantage of were they are. Football is key in the South.
I think the A-Sun Big South deal is a stepping stone for the A-Sun to get football schools instead of losing them (Mercer, ETSU) and once a core group is put together with football, it will happen.

The ASUN is going to have to persuade West Florida and West Georgia in. They are a good fit geographically and for football fit well with North Alabama and Kennesaw State. Not going to hold my breath waiting on announcements tho.

I agree about the ASUN needs to start scholarship football in some form.
The key for the Atlantic Sun right now is not to loose the revenue that comes into a Conference from the Men’s Basketball Tournament. Any Conference that has a automatic bid will receive the revenue. The amount of money is calculated by units up to the semifinals. Then is given to a Conference over a six year period. If a team gets beat in the first round the Conference still gets the money. As a teams advances that Conference gets an additional unit.
In 2013 when Florida Gulf Coast made it to the sweet 16 that was 3 units that was worth around 4 million dollars to the ASUN. That is over 600 thousand each year and the NCAA recommends that it be divided among the schools and most Conferences do in some form. In 2014 when Mercer won the first round the ASUN receive 2 units.
When a school leaves a Conference like Mercer did and USC-Upstate is doing the money stays with the Conference. The amount of money increases each season. Last Season a unit was worth around 1.67 million that’s around 260 thousand coming into the ASUN for the next 6 years. The ASUN still has money coming in from the 2013 season forward. A Conference That has several teams getting in gets additional units as a example if the SEC has 5 teams to make the Tournament and all the SEC teams get beat in the first round that is still worth over 8.3 million dollars to the SEC over a 6 year period if all 5 teams won that first round that’s over 16 million.
Now back to the ASUN I believe that if they fail to meet the AQ requirement the Conference will forfeit the money that would be coming in.
It is my understanding that For the University of North Alabama they would not get a share of the money until they completed the Transition and then it would be money that the Conference receive forward.

If we are talking about add schools for football, being this is the football thread. And schools that would benefit the A-Sun going forward in FCS as far as starting sponsoring football in the Conference, this is my list I wish they would go after,
Stetson needs to add scholarships, same with Jacksonville.
To complement UNA, I would go after Bama State. (A&M is in our Market)
We need West Florida and eventually West Georgia.
We also need a current FCS school or two. Could we pull one of the Louisiana schools?
Then after all that, pull in West Georgia, although it's in the same market as KSU, I think a close rival would go a long way into keeping KSU in the conference.
I would try to stay South and West of the Big South and OVC.
If this happens, I would have no problem staying in this conference, I have already emailed the commish.......

I agree add a current FCS team and their football played the Big South and that would also meet the requirements for the AQ for basketball.

What do y'all think about this?
A-Sun football
UNA KSU Stetson Jacksonville Richmond William and Mary
West Florida * VSU* West Georgia * Bama St *
(*) any combo of 2
Of course, if it happened, the Big South would be below the AQ required number. So those schools may just be associated with the A-Sun for football, minus Monmouth. And then the 4 (*'s) wouldn't come into play.
A-Sun outside football
UNA KSU Lipscomb Richmond William and Mary UNF Jacksonville Stetson FGCU NJIT
Richmond and W&M would be the bridge for NJIT.

That is because of a guy on Any given Saturday that is from Richmond claims he talked to their President and he says Richmond will not be in the CAA much longer. I was just wondering if they would possibly join the A-Sun. And William and Mary wouldn't stay without Richmond.
After all, I have been told that the A-Sun will try to pursue a school or two in a "crowded conference".
That would be huge for the A-Sun in my opinion.
