The School is moving to D1 yet still playing NAIA schools - Oakwood, Cumberland, and Martin Methodist. I'm for playing equal or up not down.

I still like the idea of all sports with USA, home and home for everything but football and football play in Birmingham or Montgomery and split the gate. If not we would have to play in Mobile every year.

If not we would have to play in Mobile every year. I agree with you, but I don't see any chance with football unless North Alabama was FBS and only then being in the Same Conference as South Alabama. As for as FBS, I think that North Alabama has just as good chance as Jacksonville State except that we are only 15 to 20 years behind them.

Looking at most things, I think UNA has a better shot at FBS than JSU. Breaking it down (and this should probably be on the football section JSU has the advantage in these areas- been in D1 longer. Bigger stadium. Have started winning (but that's not what they really look at) UNA advantages More populated area. Geographically in a better place People know where UNA is, most people think JSU is in Florida. According to a poll done by AL.com a few years ago, they asked who are the most popular schools (athletics wise) in the state. UNA was 3rd only behind Alabama and Auburn. So state wide popularity is stronger. I would argue that we have this 3rd biggest fan base in the state. We just have to start playing games that people want us to see, not Shorter, or even Miles or Tuskegee. So all in all, I think we would be invited before JSU. When we are ready for that.

It would be fun to develop a healthy rivalry with USA in all sports, except maybe football. Create a trophy of some kind and present it to the University that has won the most events at the end of each school year. "Alabama's Civil War"? That might be too politically incorrect. I'm sure someone more creative than me could come up with something.
As for FBS, I have zero desire for us to even think about that. I think FCS is a good place for us. I hope in 5-10 years we are right up there with North Dakota in dominating that division.

I would rather stay in FCS too, but you have to look at why we want to be in D1 to begin with, to try to stay with our peers. Our peer being JSU, Alabama A&M, Samford, Tennessee Martin, Chattanooga, even Troy and USA. So two are in FBS, if a big section, say JSU, and Chattanooga express interest or even Kennesaw State of going to FBS, I think we should be trying our hardest to make every effort to go too. Other than that, I think we are in a great place for us with A-Sun/Big South deal.

Other than that, I think we are in a great place for us with A-Sun/Big South deal. I agree we need to be more proactive in the future if the need arises. I think most of us agree we should have made the jump twenty years ago when all three of our major men's sports (football/basketball/baseball) were either coming off national championships or at least being very competitive. I'm not sure we were ready, but I doubt we would have been any less ready than Jacksonville State. I do think the landscape of FBS will change quite a bit in the next decade or so. Either a concerted effort will be made by the NCAA to provide a more level playing field for the smaller teams, or a breakup of some sort will occur. Actually, trying to force the Power 5 conferences into rules they don't agree with will probably only accelerate that happening. I wonder if we may someday have something similar to an FBS-A and FBS-AA, essentially giving the smaller ("Group of 5" as they're called) schools a chance to play for some sort of championship while also allowing bowl games to remain. I'm not sure if it would hurt FCS or have a negligible impact. Hopefully it's something we won't have to worry much about.

I'm not sure if it would hurt FCS or have a negligible impact. Hopefully it's something we won't have to worry much about. It's coming, it will start with the Power 5 going to 16 teams. But it will only be 4 conferences because it will distribute the Big 12 and desolve it. Schools like Texas and Oklahoma will be in the SEC and Big 10 and PAC 12 will split the rest. If you are some of the Big 12, you will be left out. The rest of FBS will be their own Championship, you will likely have Bowls like the Holiday Bowl as a new Major Bowl game. The Super conferences will make a pact, only to play one another, they will have their championship playoffs, 4-6 teams, possibly 8. The rest of FBS will regroup by either dropping to FCS instead of leaching off of the big money schools or take a more regional approach with the conferences. You will have "Super conference in the non power 5. That hints to what I was saying before. You can realistically have a Southeastern conference that could look like this Troy Southern Miss Tulane USA JSU Georgia State Kennesaw State Chattanooga Georgia Southern Appalachian St. UAB LA Tech LA Lafayette LA Monroe Missouri St Arkansas St If UNA sits around, we will be back to square 1, by then you might as well shut down the program.
