Some of yall may know more than I do about this, but I talked to a guy today that was in Florence for work and found out he used to play football at West Georgia...
We got to talking about the old GSC (he was a Brave not a Wolf) and the move to the ASUN...
Apparently he is also a donor and involved in different aspects of the athletic department.
He said that they have always considered UNA as big a rivalry for them as Valdosta...
Have we ever considered UWG a "rival"? I know we had some big games with them, but I never thought of them as a real rival...
Was that ever a thing for us?

To me, a real rivalry is one where you hate to lose to the other team. Not because it means you lost… but because it means they won. I don’t really feel like any of the later GSC rivalries (after Troy and JSU left) were that way. Maybe Valdosta… but even when we were battling it out between them and Delta every year, I felt those were mostly friendly rivalries.
UWG never felt like a rivalry, IMO. Maybe they saw it that way because they rarely beat us. But since we won most of the meetings, they just seemed like another conference team.
I’m all for having a competitive rivalry with them since we have the history together and because, well, we don’t really have an FCS rivalry yet.

In a way, I kinda feel that way with Austin Peay... it's not far, and it burns me up that we have lost to them 2 years in a row. TBH, when we would lose to West Georgia, I would get irate... so there is that.

Their stadium is really nice. I hope we build something similar before 2030. I went when Wingo was the starter and Tucker was the backup. Wingo took a bad cheap shot late out of bounds and messed his shoulder up. Coach Wallace called out Will Hall after game for the way he was coaching his players. Unfortunately after the loss, West Georgia went to number 1. If Tucker would have been healthy we would have had a chance. He had a quad thing or something with his leg. We didn’t do much offensively that day or defensively. Hall got a 15 yard penalty and then turned and bragged to the crowd it was him. Glad we didn’t hire him. Not a good fit here.

He’s probably going to be fired by USM in a couple of weeks. I wonder if he’d land back at UWG?

David Dean stepped down from UWG. They hired Joel Taylor (DC at Mercer), and they just brought over another Mercer coach to be DC. They struggled their last year in D2. It could be a steep climb up to FCS similar to UNA, but they have better football facilities than UNA did when they went D1 and the state of GA is a football recruitment pipeline.
