Well, it wasn't a blowout.
... so, there's that.

I'm sorry, but, at least in person, it looks nothing like a Willis team... The attitude on the side line is way better, they play faster and are where they are supposed to be. Let's be real, we lost by 10 to a veteran top 20 team, with a first year coaching staff and a crap ton of unknowns... TK (our best receiver was out, not hurt, so I can only Imagine it was a discipline out) I saw an Oline that is trying to get confidence, an undersized Dline that held their own. Was it perfect? No, not even close, but they have improved drastically. Willis would have lost by 40... I have heard Mercer also returned 10 of 11 on defense from last year. I didn't feel embarrassed by our efforts. Especially when no one, outside of a few in our on fanbase, thought we would even be in the game. My only regret was we did not win it for the potential was there.

Offense and special teams have plenty of work ahead of the next game. Hopefully Young will be back soon, the left side of the line struggled, we were better running to our right tonight, not much, but better.

Mercer would have scored over 40 on last year’s defense.

Re-watch of the game going on, take aways from a different prospective to me is, offense had a hard time getting a rhythm, I credit that to a combination of heat, a lot of new from coaches to play book, to having transfers and first game of the year, and most importantly a good defense from Mercer.
Defensively all we heard was how their QB and receivers are the best in FCS and would eat our lunch, well that didn't happen, I think our defense is well on its way in the right direction.
All in all, not happy with another L, but very happy with the progress made.
Before we get upset too much, it takes more than a handful of practices and 1 game to change a culture, and I can already see a drastic change.
ROAR DAMN LIONS

But they kept saying they had completely changed the culture all off-season

But they kept saying they had completely changed the culture all off-season Well, in my opinion, they have... they have better attitudes, their demeanor on the field is 1000% better, didn't see any throwing fits, yelling obscenities so I don't have to be afraid to take my kids, they are getting coached a ton better. Coaches aren't belittling them, they are teaching them.... Yesterday, they had chances to win... I'm frustrated about that and that only, but I guarantee the coaches are more frustrated and are going to adjust... Speaking of adjusting, noticed we actually did some adjusting after the first half... something Willis never done....

I can’t judge the team by anything more than what I see on TV, or read online. But I definitely think the youth and enthusiasm of the staff have had a positive effect on the team.
That said, most of the time the team with more talent will win, and I’m just afraid we fixed the defense in the off-season but didn’t do enough to compensate for the loss of Powell at RB. I’m not sure Lacey and Driggers are every-down backs. Our offense benefited greatly last year from having that running threat. It no doubt helped our passing game. If our top RB can’t average more than 3 yards per carry, teams will simply sit in nickel and dime and force us to beat them in the air. Hopefully Kennebrew returns soon, but I’m not sure that will be enough if we continue to only complete half our passing attempts.
Don’t want to be negative after just one game, but the offense I saw yesterday will not win many games. Of course, we have nowhere to go but up.

Is that the first game in years we didn’t have a multiple personal fouls called? We had the late face mask penalty, but we really didn’t do a lot of dumb selfish things. I would rather lose a close hard fought game with class than lose the game and embarrass the school you represent. Offense as they watch film and fix all those miscues will be improved. Our reads were missed, our timing was out of sync, and then assignments were blown over and over. Clean up those things and will bust double digits next week. I would like to see Daniels and Lacey get the majority of running back carries. The burst from start to 3 steps for them seems fast. Driggers seems hesitant still and can’t be that with our oline missing and not strong at the point of attack. Walters can pass, but he didn’t look comfortable yesterday? Got to find a way to get him in rhythm. We converted on 1 and 30….that’s awesome. We didn’t convert on third and short or fourth and short….really wasn’t even close. Special teams has to covert scoring opportunities, surely that was the worst game the FG unit will have all year? Freshman punter was a bright spot. He seemed to get more comfortable as he played and also made sure he launched it out of the end zone. On the our first home game, win that one and momentum will be on our side. Would love to Mercer knock off Ole Miss by the way….
