For UNA to compete they will have to find a way to slow down Harper and James the receivers. Those guys are impressive with the ball in their hands. Over 1800 all purpose yards and 14 Td’s for one of the receivers last year. Over 1100 yards receiving and 13 TD’s for the other receiver. On defense their linebacker Dowling is very disruptive. He is up for defensive player of the year. Recorded over 90 tackles last year with 9 for loss. Mercer brings back quite a talented team. We must start fast on offense and stay focused on our assignments on defense. Tough opening game.

One thing they don’t have returning is a starter at QB. Maybe that will make them more vulnerable the first game.

I saw where the school is offering students a free ticket and bus ride to the game. I hope they get some to go.

On reddit I saw someone post some betting lines that had us 21-point dogs. Yeesh.
Obviously last year was bad, and we have to earn the right to be respected again. I just don't like the FCS world thinking we are a punching bag. Win or lose, I hope we at least show that we are a team getting better.
Is it Saturday yet?

I'm just hoping the Lions aren't completely blown out.
Yeah, I know ... my standards have sunk to all-time lows. :/

Per TimesDaily, both QBs in the two-deep roster will play Saturday.
Also, they do have a returning starter at QB. He was the freshman starter during the spring 2021 season but wasn’t QB1 for them last year.
So, Mercer is stacked with returning players. The only game comparison last season was against common opponent Chatty. The Mocs beat Mercer by 20 later in the season after beating UNA by 27 early on.

Unfortunately they seem to be a better team than I had hoped/expected. Historically Mercer has usually finished toward the bottom of the SoCon. I saw one preseason poll with them as high as 3rd this year. The next 2 weeks we will be playing, at worst, the predicted 3rd and 4th best teams in the SoCon, with Chattanooga next week. Starting the Dearmon era with a weaker opponent would have been nice, but, we also wouldn't be playing on ESPN. The exposure is something hard to pass up. Hopefully we can make it a positive experience one way or the other.

Think we score a lot of points again, we just need the defense to get some stops. Mercer has an explosive offense. The Lions on offense can’t turn it over and defense needs two turnovers for us to pull out a win.

They only started back football in 2013 after stopping the program in 1941

UNA 41 Mercer 37
We get the stop this time! Reddick gets the big hit that secures the game. Ossai dominates in the trenches to give us just enough stops. Floyd tackles everyone. On offense: Walters proves he is a game changer with his legs and accuracy. Lacey shows offs his moves, speed, and nose for the end zone. A new guy flashes big play ability and belongs at UNA with a name like Florence. He makes several big first downs. We show no Mercer in game one as we escape with the victory and momentum heading to our first home game. Guess you could say we Bearly made it out with the win.

It’s finally GAME DAY!
Saw the TimesDaily pick was Mercer 35, UNA 28. Let’s turn that score around and we’ll be feeling good tonight.

Glad our own paper is against us today. Hope all that adds a little chip. We should be motivated by last year. All the preseason rankings should just add a little fuel. Hope we see a team that is determined to prove everyone wrong today….well not their coaches…they believe. GAME DAY!
