I think the article is right in saying the federal government will need to step in. But I think it needs to step in to ensure the NCAA can actually act as a governing body. Is that constitutional? I don't know. I'm not a lawyer, so I can't say. I think giving SOME power back to the NCAA would make the most sense. Right now you have all these different states passing different laws, essentially allowing their state's schools to do whatever they please. As much as we say NIL and/or the transfer portal is not sustainable, it pales in comparison to that. On the other hand, I think the article is wrong in saying the NCAA isn't deserving of blame. They are absolutely deserving of blame, because everybody and their brother could see some form of NIL or money to players was going to happen. Instead of being proactive on it and putting sensible guidelines in place, the NCAA just threw up their hands and waited for the courts to decide. So now we have a wild west situation that Congress or the courts will have to continue to monitor and find a good solution for. It's all just an absolute mess and it could have been avoided. Then again, with all these conferences seemingly out for money and ready to throw others under the bus at the thought of getting more (see the B1G)... maybe there's no way a compromise could have ever happened without the government first getting involved. |

Agree, the NCAA owns a great deal of the blame. They chose to take their hand off the wheel and are guilty of neglect.
The whole purpose of the NCAA was to create and maintain a framework for college athletics. Keeping things fair, looking ahead, providing leadership and a road map for the future is a given mandate. It takes strong leadership to pull this off and it was not there in the recent past. They needed a Kennesaw Mountain Landis for commissioner but basically had an absentee landlord.
Methinks the NCAA has someone running the show now; who not only knows how to lead but wants too and will. He is not running from the problems or hoping they will somehow go away. He appears to be taking them head on come what may. I admire that, especially as that is, in fact,the job. I've heard (don't know if true) that he may have had a hand in the recent IRS ruling on NIL. Not often I give the Infernal Revenoors a pat on the back but I can on this topic. I hope the new NCAA leader holds to his guns with regard to the NCAA having priority over the states.
The article makes sense and brings up pertinent points that are not heard in the common discussion threads. Anyway, some Power 5 teams/conferences may choose to buck and threaten to take their marbles and go home but it would not seem to be as easily done as most would think.
