Now, I'm not an expert, but I do pay attention to things and try to pull info from people behind the scenes if and when I can...
To me, it looks like, combined with what has been said by commissioners and ADs since the ASUN has announced football and the schools involved, we may have a scenario of partnership or even just a simple agreement.
The ASUN and CUSA could partner to save football bringing all ASUN football schools into CUSA for football only and invite a couple of other FBS Indy or FCS schools as full members and save CUSA... ASUN would be fine without football. In that scenario, schools like UNA, JSU and EKU can get back to historical rivalry games with schools like Troy and Western Kentucky. And even create rivals with schools like MTSU.
Or, CUSA pay ASUN for football schools and bring them all in as full members...
And that scenario will be continued in next post....

CUSA invites Liberty, EKU, APSU, UCA, UNA, JSU, KSU
Then adds SHSU and SFA
Add that to the 5 currently left in CUSA and you have a 14 school league with a good tight core group, more similar to the original CUSA and what they wanted to begin with.
The ASUN is back to being a non football conference and more similar to what they were in previous years. And the non football schools don't have much to worry about other than UNF or FGCU wanting FBS football with a conference (CUSA) willing to take them because of FIU.
The conference would probably look like
CUSA EAST
Liberty EKU WKU MTSU APSU KSU FIU
CUSA WEST
UCA UNA JSU LA TECH SHSU SFA UTEP***

Hmm, I've been a little skeptical about an FBS move at this time. We are not to that level talent wise, facility wise and money wise. Looking at the teams listed, however, most are in the same boat. I see potential though. Overall good regional balance East and West (would seem less travel for UNA/JSU in the East but I get it). Most all teams would probably take their lumps in out of conference play in the early years of the conference. In conference play could be a real donnybrook affair early on...teams would seem to be pretty even for the most part. The universities would need to have a strong willingness to mutually support and promote the conference. The footprint is good with plenty of talent within to recruit. Schools would need to stress the benefits of regional universities over the biguns...maybe combine marketing skills. Lot of shoes to drop but, maybe.

What are the real options for CUSA? Add Liberty, and maybe UCONN as football only but that saves nothing. IMO, you have to add all the football schools in the ASUN, and maybe even the entire WAC. Everyone said both ASUN and WAC was wanting FBS... This may have been foreseen by both commissioners last year... Just saying. Before anyone says we will not go FBS, if there is a thread of possibility that JSU will go, I have to think UNA will too, that was a big reason UNA to D1 was even considered. Then JSU move to the ASUN had a lot to do with regional rivals and historical rivals. What I see if all of the football schools from the ASUN don't go CUSA and just a few do is the rest of the football schools from the OVC come to the ASUN. Or we move to the OVC, and I don't think that's good. I would love to see our current lineup in the ASUN play out to see how strong a FCS conference we can be, but I would also like to see us in FBS as a conference and be able to play Troy, UAB, South Alabama, Southern Miss and so on on a regular basis.

Can a conference buy FBS rights from a conference on life support?

The reason I say that is, let the ASUN have the rights and be an FBS conference, or even have the split that Gumbart wanted to begin with, and let UTEP go to the WAC and both be FBS...

Can a conference buy FBS rights from a conference on life support? Could the ASUN afford it? Just on basketball alone the CUSA is still worth over 20 credit units.

Has anyone heard any mention or the possibility of going FBS from anyone in the Administration at North Alabama?

ASUN is a good compact group of universities with a great deal of potential as a united group. Not so much potential should they each strike out to swim the ocean on their own. If they hold together,"one for all and all for one", the leverage would seem to be there for opportunities, now and in the future, no matter the path chosen. Unity and stability grow a conference. The key is to stick together.

Well, they better get on the horn. Jax State could be joining Liberty in CUSA.

There is discussion on some of the Boards that Eastern Kentucky and UT-Chattanooga would be next.

What depressing news.
We sat there and watched Troy and JSU move up in the 90s, and did NOTHING. Now we get this carrot of FINALLY being in a conference with JSU again dangled in front of us... and now it's gonna be gone, just like that. Troy and JSU will again be in FBS, while we are stuck indefinitely. What happens to ASUN football? If EKU leaves too, can we find two more teams to replace them? Or will we be right back in the Big South playing teams we care nothing about?
I'll probably come to accept this once I have some time to get over the emotions of it. But this just sucks.

Super annoying. If this happens, we’d have been better off staying in D2.
