Well, now that the spring season is done, I vote we get head first in to fall. What are your expectations with football this year?

I’m eager to look out for any roster changes between now and fall camp.

We have to travel to Louisiana twice, Jacksonville, and Monmouth in New Jersey. Another of our home games is Chattanooga, which will likely be a pretty decent team. I think so much, both now and in the future, will simply depend on what happens with transfers this summer. Will we lose any additional guys? Will we be able to bring in some difference makers, maybe from FBS, that are looking for more playing time? Honestly, with the schedule we have I think even a 6-5 record could actually be a positive step, as long as our losses are not absolute blowouts. 7-4 or better would probably be a great season. I know we are used to being better than that, but I'm trying to be a realist.

If we have any semblance of a running game, we should be better than .500. I guess the roster will not up date until fall camp. Only the coaches know what areas need depth and maybe starters, pending transfers? Recruiting to keep players and develop them for our team needs is vital with the transfer portal. Really think big Mike Boykin would have benefited by playing a full schedule this year. He could have put up some numbers that scouts would have been drawn too. Big Martin needs to have a great year in the middle of the defensive line. Really need a linebacker to step up.

Just signed a Defensive Tackle transfer from Univ of Louisville. We had too. I hated seeing big Broderic Martin transfer to WKU. Also wonder what other players are trying to leave? Really looking like our conference needs to go FBS or we will keep losing good players.

When the NCAA made it easier to transfer last October, I suggested that UNA would not reach its potential as a program unless it improved its culture. It wasn't that the culture is toxic so much as the fact that the new transfer rules (and the subsequent addition of a year of eligibility) changed the metrics used to assess programs. Putting the right players on any roster is about to get way, way harder. (Here's a link to an ESPN article that reinforces some of my points: www.espn.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/31491774/college-football-looming-roster-crisis-how-fix-it.) I stand by those assertions. Picking up transfers in the spring/summer will not offset the need for position coaches to develop talent, turn kids into men who are leaders on the field and off, and retain players by making UNA a place that people don't want to leave. Coaches at Last Chance U (East Mississippi Community College) can win with a roster that depends on transfers because the quality of play in junior college isn't as high as it is in FCS. Coaches at Sam Houston can successfully insert transfers into their roster because they have a solid foundation of non-transfers whose skills and physiques they developed, and because SHSU is larger and well-established. Unless coaches at UNA develop the talent they have--and, judging by the low number of snaps played outside of the top 30 players on the team, that wasn't a priority last year--adding transfers is like polishing a turd. The number of players with eligibility remaining who left UNA last year suggests that there's a lack of buy-in, which usually indicates a lack of leadership and accountability. I do think the coaches at UNA can rectify buy-in and leadership issues; I do think they can improve the degree to which they develop the talent they have. Perhaps the previous AD measured success in wins and losses instead of the process by which wins are earned? Perhaps the search for a new AD can produce some self-assessments that will be useful? Regardless, so many things can go right next season if the coaches will spend the summer worrying more about development and leadership than about the latest star athlete who entered the transfer portal.

Suddenly the Big South isn’t such a weak conference anymore. IMO, at least. Adding NCA&T certainly helps. If we were ranked in the conference standings, I’d like to say we’re no worse than 4th. I think we really have to beat teams 4 through 8 on their list to feel like we’re making some progress. Then, can we steal a game or two from the Big 3 at the top? I know this will likely be our last season in the Big South, but I’m still a little irritated they never deemed us eligible for the conference title. I know they don’t have to, but like the ASUN, they could if they wanted. Oh well.

The Lions really need to make some noise this last season of Big South play and carry some momentum into next year.

Huge opportunity to make a statement in the first three weeks. All ranked opponents, win one on the road and one at home and message sent. Let’s go Lions, we are all ready for the season. LEETTTS GO!
