How does 7A state champ QB with 41 TD passes have no college offers?
Thompson’s Sawyer Pate caught the snap at the 20 near the right hash at Jordan-Hare Stadium, set his feet and fired a laser into the front left corner of the end zone.
J.B. Mitchell hauled in the perfectly placed throw from Pate for 14-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead in last week’s 40-14 victory over Central-Phenix City to win the Class 7A championship game.
“Not many people can put it right where it needs to be like that,” Thompson coach Mark Freeman said.
Pate added a second touchdown pass in the 7A title game – another laser to Mitchell for a 19-yard touchdown -- and added two rushing touchdowns.
What’s recruiting like for Pate, a player with 41 touchdown passes and just three interceptions this season? “It’s really slow,” he said.
As molasses.
Pate said he has zero scholarship offers with Early Signing Day less than 10 days away.
“I have to leave it all to God,” Pate said. “He’s got the plan. He’s got the answers. I’ve got to let him take control of my life. You can’t worry about it. If he wants me to play football in college, then that’s the way to go. If he doesn’t, I have to go with it.”
Pate won the championship game MVP award and was invited to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic as an injury replacement for Hoover’s Robby Ashford after the game.
Thompson also earned the No. 1 ranking in AL.com’s season-ending Power 25 rankings.
7A: Central-Phenix City vs. Thompson HSFB
Rewind Class 7A title-game win
Pate completed 229-of-306 passes for 3,138 yards this season, with 41 touchdowns and three interceptions in his first year as Thompson’s starter. He added five rushing touchdowns, including a game-clinching 7-yarder in the fourth quarter of the championship game.
Pate, of course, could become a late riser in recruiting circles in January as schools miss on quarterbacks or want to add a second one to its recruiting class. His numbers were similar to Alabama signee Taulia Tagovailoa’s 2018 stats in the same offense (3,684 yards, 35 passing TDs, 5 interceptions), although Pate threw about 125 fewer passes and finished with a higher completion percentage.
Could – or should – Pate end up in the SEC? Probably not.
Remember, though, how Devlin Hodges signed with Samford out of Mortimer Jordan and broke Steve McNair’s FCS career passing record and has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to three wins as a rookie. Remember that Hewitt-Trussville’s has won the 2018 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year award and just led App State to a fourth straight conference title.
Pate could be the next quarterback to bloom where’s planted in the college, even if it’s not in the SEC.
