Slow down there Brandon...we haven’t won our first conference tourney game in men’s or women’s. I really like your enthusiasm, but Liberty has more students than Alabama, Auburn, UAB, Troy and North Alabama combined. We just don’t have the resources of some of the other schools. We get the coach who falls in love with Florence and in love with the community. The community hopefully falls for the coach and support pours in we build tradition and have some special wins along the way. Pretty good script right? Hope it is nonfiction one day instead of fiction.

Roar Lions I understand, but I was thinking more along the lines of when we start receiving money from the conference, on top of guaranteed game money. That in itself will get us a long way as far as resources. Especially if you consider we got basically nothing in D2 per year, we should be able to get to a very competitive salary for coaches, especially for our conference and peer schools in the region.

Oh my. Seems the flop got more coverage than the win. Google "Scottie James flop". Haha. Oops.

Unfortunately we won't be able to compete with a school like Liberty on salaries (not that anybody was necessarily suggesting that). That probably goes for the other private schools in our conference. Liberty in particular already looks to be the best all-around athletics department in the ASUN. I want the conference to be stable, and I'm not scared of competition, but I sort of hope they get an offer to move somewhere else in the next few years. They have money to burn and don't care to do it.

They have money to burn and don't care to do it. I would rather them stay. They help the conference, in turn helps ALL the schools in the conference, that will translate into more resources for each school, better facilities, better competition and better recruiting. Look at it this way, we all know what kind of year FGCU had, but that was not expected. If they would have gotten close to the past, there is no doubt in my mind that 2 from the ASun will get in the tournament. Liberty provides a 3rd "top tier" program for the conference. On top of that, UNF is good for a great season every now and then. So if we can build our program, like I think we will, you will have us, Lipscomb, Liberty, FGCU, and UNF fighting it out yearly for the conference, with the occasional Stetson or NJIT having great years. Like I have said before, with stability, this can be a great mid major conference. So much so, that I dont think Liberty will want to go to another conference outside of maybe the AAC, and I dont dre that happening. I'm going ahead and making a prediction, the ASun will be a multi bid league in a few short years. And not just in basketball.

I just worry about Liberty massively out-spending everyone else in the conference. It doesn't always equal success, but it certainly gives them a leg up. I agree with those four you mentioned being positioned to do well. Obviously Kennesaw's basketball programs stink right now, but there's no reason they can't get better. They should be better. I think the ASUN needs to try to do a couple of things to improve the overall view of the conference. First, we obviously need to win some tournament games. I know FGCU's past - we need someone else to win some games. Another thing I would like to see is improving the non-conference schedules. I know this is difficult, since you need some home games before January, and not a lot of other conferences have teams willing to come to ASUN arenas. But I'd really like to see our schools try to move away from playing D2 and NAIA type teams. They really drag down the strength of schedule, and in turn, the NET rankings. Take Lipscomb - they played two D3s this year. I know those were home games that perhaps made some money for them, but if you replace those two teams with even fairly bad mid-major schools, and even if you lose - ok, you're 23-9 instead of 25-7, and may still have a higher NET/RPI. Again, I realize better scheduling is easier said than done. But I would really like to see the effort made.

I get your issue(if that's the right word) with Liberty, but again, in turn, it can end up making UNA more money. They, can help the rest of the conference with exposure, I have heard that the conference and ESPN is working on a deal to get more ASun games (not just basketball) on ESPN or ESPN 2, and still have the ESPN+ package. As far as scheduling goes, the conference is also concerned about it, that's one reason the ASun and the MAAC have agreed to have a ASun/MAAC challenge starting next year(if I'm not mistaken) I would have rather did it with the A-10 but it's better than nothing. And Pujol said a big name is coming to Florence next year. He didnt say who, but said we should see a sell out.

Not sure they have as many engaged fans as their alumni base suggests they should, but potential is there for them to be a moneymaker. If they “bring up” the rest of the conference, that will be great. I think I had seen something about the MAAC challenge but had already forgotten it. That could be interesting. Those schools aren’t exactly well-known, but it’s exposure for the ASUN in the New York/Connecticut/New Jersey markets, where there’s a lot of good high school basketball. I had NOT heard about a big name coming to Florence. That’s interesting. I doubt we’re talking an SEC team, so maybe something more like an AAC, Sun Belt, Conference USA type school? Maybe a Middle Tennessee State? UAB? Not sure if you’d classify those as “big name”, though obviously it would be as far as teams that have visited Flowers. Are my expectations too low? It’s exciting to think about, regardless. I’d love an actual sellout, standing-room only crowd at Flowers. As long as it’s on a Saturday so I can schedule a trip to town

Schools I would like to see in Florence Troy UAB South Alabama Ole Miss South Carolina.............my guess

Coach Martin and Pujol have a very good relationship. Would be amazing to have South Carolina in Flowers Hall. I may end up taking 3-5 customers if that happens.

Just taking a look at the schedule from this year you would think a “big name” coming to Flowers would have to be someone we played this year having some type of Home and Home agreement. But how cool would it be if it was an SEC school like South Carolina.. My guess it will be one of the teams I have listed below:
Samford St. Louis Pittsburg Troy Toledo UAB
I guess a few dark horses could be teams associated with Coach Pujol like maybe Wyoming or VCU. We really need to be realistic when we say a “big name” coming to town because of the odds of getting a Power 5 school I would say is less than 10%,... As the new kids on the block any “name” school to come to Flowers would be huge for recruiting. It sure will be interesting to see who it is, we only have to wait at least 5-6 months before we find out unless someone leaks it early.

Just read this on the ASUN site: ASUN programs have now posted five combined victories in the past seven NCAA tournaments and eight in the conference's history.
