I prefer old gold honestly. Well, I prefer it over the orange-tinted cheddar yellow we have been using the last few years. The "gold" in the old basketball uniforms, like the Otis Boddie years, was what I would simply call "yellow". Same with the helmet and football pants in the late 80s. But I suppose athletes have a tendency to shy away from calling things yellow, I guess because of the old association of yellow and cowards. Who knows. It's dumb, but a lot of sports superstitions are dumb.
Regardless of what shade of gold we use, it would still be better to see as an accent than black or gray or any other third color we try to add.

A gold helmet similar to Georgia techs would be cool to see. The picture of Otis Boddie someone posted on the message board, they wore the yellow colored uniforms. You just don’t see many actual old gold uniforms other than the old gold just being accents on purple or white uniforms. You should see how much helmets. Coach Willis will wear anything as long as he has it in the budget. He is all about honoring the old teams from the past like he has done before. Those things aren’t cheap, especially helmets. Gold pants are cheaper but he does a good job representing the past teams with the budget he currently has. I know him personally, and he would wear anything as long as he can afford it. Some things are more important like paying coaches, recruiting, and redoing the lockerrooms. I understand we don't have an Oregon budget for uniforms, or even a budget as large as some of the top FCS teams (at least yet). I think my frustration lies in the fact that we DO have an alternate helmet... but it's white. Now, I like the white helmet, don't get me wrong - especially my avatar, of course. But how much better would the leaping lion helmet be if the shell was gold? I agree that gold pants should be more doable. I would be fine with keeping the helmets as they are if we could work in gold pants every now and then. This past weekend we wore the '68 throwback helmet, a uniform that had gold pants (old gold, I believe). It would have been the perfect time to introduce some. Purple helmet, purple jersey, gold pants would be a fantastic home uniform. But as I've said a couple of times, my biggest issue is basketball. If they don't want to do an alternate uniform that's gold - fine. But at least swap out the awful black trim with gold, and maybe gold for some of the white on the women's set. There's just simply no reason to ever have black on our jerseys. I love everything I've seen from Coach Pujol, but if he made that decision, it's disappointing. As far as whether old gold can work on a basketball uniform, I submit this for evidence...

That’s my point to Catchstratchfever and the other person. You can call those colors purple and gold but that’s definitely yellow. Now that we’re more of an actual gold, y’all want us to go back to yellow.

Coach Willis has been all for honoring past UNA teams in wearing different logos and other decals on helmets, which I think is cool considering that no one else has ever done it. Our color gold is more like the NO Saints or Georgia tech gold now. Adidas does have a metallic gold in their color ways which I why I figure football has metallic gold on their uniforms. I like the metallic gold because it stands out more for all the “gold lovers”. Can basketball have more gold in their uniforms? I’d agree with y’all by saying yes they should, let’s just give them a year or two

I’d agree with y’all by saying yes they should, let’s just give them a year or two I do appreciate what Coach Willis has done, if he is the driving force behind some of the throwbacks. Please let him know I said that! The "leaping lion" helmet is great, even if I still wish it were gold. And I really liked the throwback Florence State helmet from this past weekend, along with the 90s throwback from Homecoming. Those are great ideas that I definitely support. It's just easy as a fan to always want more, I suppose. I agree that the shade of gold has changed over the years. I think CSF wants yellow, as we used a lot in the 70s and 80s. If you look at old photos, it appears we used mostly the mustard-y brownish "gold" back in the Florence State days. What I have been calling "old gold" is the metallic gold you mention, I think. I don't really care what shade we use, though I prefer metallic/old. I just want us to USE it instead of black, gray, etc. And I have to politely disagree with "giving them a year or two". This season is so important since a lot of fans around the country will be seeing us for the first time. Heck, the men's basketball uniforms are brand new! That's the frustrating part. We have been planning for this season for so long now. We need to build our "brand" (even if that phrase is overused). And yet somebody in the athletic department thought it was a good time to START incorporating black into our uniforms. I just think that's an insult to the fans.

That explains it. In the 1960s and into the 70s, we wore the old GOLD which (in my opinion, looks shabby and like we forgot to wash our uniforms. I know because I was there. In the 80s we switched to yellow GOLD and immediately had the sharpest unis in D2. I know because I was there. Now some of you seem to be stuck on this silly idea that there's no such thing as yellow GOLD, completely forgetting about... Green Bay Packers. Team colors, Dark green, GOLD.... The Los Angeles Lakers colors are Lakers Purple, GOLD Pittsburgh Pirates official colors are black, GOLD (yellow) and white...
If anyone has ever seen these legendary teams play, they would know the GOLD these teams wear is YELLOW GOLD.
I agree that they call the yellow gold, but it's just a yellow to me. I like the Old Gold or Vegas Gold. I have to say that it looks better than some old dirty pants. Like Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, Colorado and even UCF. And I'm not saying we should have solid gold pants or tops, just more gold than white or grey, black and so on. Those colors should not even be in the mix. And I'm 35. As far as the budget for Willis, I understand why, but they have to replace helmets,or get them reconditioned every so many years, they could plan to have gold helmets in the future. And no, before someone says it, because they always do, hold dont cost any more than any other colors these days, I have checked on that.

No, actually the color "yellow gold" is used outside of athletics as well.

Mr little shot, you aren't very intelligent, are you? I would think the millions of people who call the Lakers, Bengal Tigers and Packers, GOLD, know a little more about color than you. Haha
But like I said, I would prefer the shabby, dull, dirty look compared to the northwestern look who, traditionally, was one of the worst athletic programs in history. The purple and white is only slightly worse than when we run around looking like the purple blobs. Maybe we should just go all the way and wear rainbow unis since our colors don't really matter. Of course that would leave out the purple.....

I'm not really sure why disagreeing over what somebody calls a color is a good reason for name-calling. If I ask my wife what color the Lakers' jerseys are, or the Packers' pants, she will say yellow. That color is yellow. In sports, it's often called gold. Those teams can call it whatever they want, it's their prerogative. I can call the sky "nectarine" if I want. Doesn't change the fact that it's blue. UNA's official colors are purple and gold. At various times our gold has been yellow, metallic, a shade that's almost brown, etc. Whatever. I have my preference, but honestly I would be fine with any of those shades of "gold" AS LONG AS it replaces black, gray, etc. I thought that was the whole purpose of our frustration, not trying to define what people call Pantone PMS 123.

I also liked those yell... uh, gold, whatever they were... pants in the late 80s. The leaping lion in my avatar? It was originally on a yellow helmet. They're all better than black. Thankfully my wife wanted white gold. Well, as thankful as I can be for buying something that put a big dent in my bank account.

If I insulted you guys I apologize. I'm just a frustrated old man who doesn't like changing our school colors. But I am through with it. I just wanted to add a comment about an article in the paper about Rabbit Thomas and Bobby Joe Pride. After seeing them play, our little crowd on Roach Road argued about who would get to be called Rabbit or Bobby Joe in our front yard games. I remember Bobby Joe blazing his way for a TD on a long kickoff return. The ROTC fired the cannon. The grass caught afire. Not sure if it was because of the cannon or Bobby Joe's shoes!
When we first got youth football in Cloverdale, my little brother snapped up number 23 as soon as the boxes were opened even though he was the center. I had intended to be number 32 because Rabbit was the MAN but when I was sentenced to be QB of a team that had never played organized football, I picked number 12 of course. I was a big fan of Phil Logan and Randy Elmore at FSU but, come on, Joe Willie!
Ah, those were the days. As I see this country sliding toward the abyss, never to return, I'll save my money and lower my blood pressure by watching sports on TV but vigorously avoiding all of espn's "made for wimps" tv shows and putting UNA out of my mind. I hope they are successful but I have my doubts. Good luck and good health to the players but to the ones in positions of power, you should keep your bags packed.
Adios
