Weaver is a 6-foot, 230-pounder from Saraland, near Mobile. He led Saraland High School to a 13-2 record and a berth in the Class 6A state championship game as a senior in 2014. He was named the Coastal Alabama Player of the Year and was an honorable mention all-state selection. Weaver signed with Louisiana-Lafayette out of high school and redshirted there in 2015. He later transferred to Jones (Mississippi) Community College where he played last season. Weaver completed 91 of 151 passes for 1,151 yards and 8 touchdowns, while throwing 4 interceptions last season. He also ran for 235 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Weaver was also a standout linebacker in high school and said he brings that same physicality to quarterback. “I’m not a quarterback you will see sliding a lot,” he said. “I’m not going to shy away from getting hit. I feel like I am a good leader on and off the field. I’m a real competitor and I love to win.”
Weaver is married with a young son and another child due in September which means he is probably more mature for his age.
“He has a family and you can tell he is very mature,” UNA head coach Chris Willis said. “The No. 1 thing we got from everybody about Chris is that he has great leadership qualities.”
“Chris will compete like very few guys I’ve been around,” said Kelly, who was a standout quarterback at Southern Miss. “He has a real toughness about him and plays quarterback with a linebacker mentality.
“Chris has tremendous arm talent and can make any throw. I know the other kids will grow to respect him of how he competes. He is the type of player who can change a team.”
Those are definitely qualities we sorely missed last year. Sounds like a Jacob Tucker type young man.

Excellent. If he doesn't get the starting job it sounds like he will push the others pretty hard.

Excellent. If he doesn't get the starting job it sounds like he will push the others pretty hard. I think the future does look bright at QB! I'm not sure about Blake Hawkins progress but if he could eventually make it back, you would have to think a 6-5 QB with 4.5 speed could either join the competition or do what a lot of the big dog recruiters wanted him to do and move to wide receiver. Tall, fast wide receivers are really in vogue now.

A neck injury is nothing to play with.

One thing I like about Weaver is he was recruited as an FBS quarterback. Doesn't mean he's the best one on the roster, but obviously he has talent. And for all the gripes I have with Coach Hud, he knew a thing or two about QBs.
I'll be a little surprised if Weaver starts against Southern Utah simply because he didn't show up until the first day of camp. But, I think odds are he'll be the starter at some point.

I think Lopez will start. He is very sharp at reading defenses and had the month of working out with the team that Weaver missed. Either way we should be much improved and have a little depth. Hawkins is no longer an option at quarterback. The Files kid has the best arm in camp, hope we are able to redshirt him and let him take us to playoffs his senior year. Lopez reminds you of Tucker with his scrambling ability and throws on the run.
Expect a new safety to arrive soon...I hope we do not have any serious injuries in our scrimmage Saturday. Humphrey seems to be making cuts with trust again. He did not trust his knee last year. If he comes back to form...maybe a special year.

I watched Humphrey single handedly tear apart a very good Central team his senior year at Columbia. I said then he will be a special player in College, I had no idea he would go to UNA, I hate the injury, wish we would see what I know he is capable of.

Wish I knew who some of those QB's were. The numbers don't seem to be their regular numbers. Looking good!

Wish I knew who some of those QB's were. The numbers don't seem to be their regular numbers. Looking good! Lopez is #6 Burton is #12 Weaver is #7 Files is #11 Markham is #16
Burton, Weaver and Files are big boys but not height-wise. Burton is tallest at 6-3 207 (looks much heavier), Weaver is 6-0 230 and looks it, Markham is 5-9 192 (sturdy build), Rett Files is 6-3 210 and Lopez is 6-1 197 though both appear to be about the same height.
One QB prospect for next season is big too. Duncan Hodges is 6-3 220. Kendall Davis is a 6-1 178 R-Fr. He's on the slight side but his daddy, James Davis, was right there with Ronald McKinnon as the best middle linebackers in UNA history..... so far. He's a winner and great student. He was two-time Class 6A state player of the week and totalled 44 touchdowns and had more than 3,000 yards his senior year so he knows where the end zone is. He's also a basketball player so he's probably very athletic and quick. Could end up being a David Palmer-like player.

There are a couple of things that are really misleading to me here as I have been watching practice and the first scrimmage. First off, unfortunately Kendall Davis was never going to be his dad. Him and Aplin never really had a good relationship from what I heard this spring and to be honest probably was only giving a scholarship because he was a UNA "legacy." Second off, Files is the tallest of the QB group and is looking skinnier than 210 (needs to get in the weight room before he can step in). To me, he looks at least 6'4". Also, I believe we do not find a quarterback until later in the year. No quarterbacks are going to get "separation" from the pack with our o line having this much trouble picking up the pass rush. I think we probably settle in on a starter during the Azusa Pacific game (First home game). I do believe Lopez ends up being the guy with weaver being #2 and Files being at #3. I truly believe that Files will be a big time guy for us down the road. I think he could probably be our guy this year. Obviously, we probably don't want that to happen as we won't be able to play for anything for awhile so the staff probably would plan on him redshirting. Now, I would expect for him to play in 4 games with these new red shirt rules. None of this will matter though, unless our offensive line plays together as a unit. I hope they get it together or we may be looking at using 4 quarterbacks like we did last year, and lord knows we don't want that again!

Offensive line is always THE toughest part of the team to build. That's why the quality of football has gone down over the last several years. In the pros you can't keep your offensive line intact because of free agency. In college, the ncaa has restricted the amount of time you can practice plus the better players rarely play more than two years before bolting for the nfl. You rarely see the "well oiled machines" of the past.
