Like most freshman football players, Brodric Martin expected to come in and make an immediate impact when he reported for fall practice last year at North Alabama. At 6-foot-7 and almost 300 pounds, Martin certainly had the size needed to make an early impact with the Lions. But the defensive linemen found out that college football is much different from what he experienced in high school. “Last year was a big learning experience for me,” Martin said. “I came from a school where I did a lot, so I expected to play quickly here and it didn’t happen. It was very humbling for me.”

You would think they would understand that if they redshirt you, it's for their (both the player and the team) best interests. That usually means they believe in you enough to trust that you will learn the system and heavily contribute in upcoming seasons. By the end of it, you will likely become the "Man".

I just approach it with the attitude that expecting 18-22 year olds to think rationally is going to lead to you, the fan, having a bad time, haha. Just look at all the transfers happening nowadays, and not just in football. Most of these kids were the best player on their team their entire lives. They don’t know how to handle it when there are suddenly other guys as good as, if not better, than them. I expect big things from the redshirt freshmen though. The ones that stuck it out know exactly what we face the next four years. They won’t have the best record in school history when their careers are over, but they’ll be the first class to play as a D1 team for all four years. That’s pretty cool, to me.

Like Martin said, it was humbling. Better to be humbled BEFORE you go on the field for real. I look forward to him humbling offensive linemen, running backs and QBs!

I wonder how many of them decided they probably weren't D1 caliber.

NDSU fan here. Redshirting is a huge part of building depth in FCS. Redshirt entire classes if you can. The players are so much better after one year of learning and strength/conditioning. All incoming freshman should be aware they will likely redshirt.

Agree. Really looking forward to this year and the future for athletics program. We hope to follow a blueprint that resembles the success of NDSU in football. We are actually looking forward to some of the new matchups on our schedule the next few years. You guys are the mark, hope we give you a test, do not see our talent level being there for an entire game. We do have a strong defensive unit, our offense is learning each other right now. We have some talent there, but our chemistry will be behind. Hope you guys have another great season, thanks for hosting our Lions early in our FCS endeavors.
