The MAC doesn't traditionally make a lot of noise in basketball, so I had to look up how Toledo did last year. They went 23-11 and lost their conference championship game. Regardless of the strength of the conference, that's a good season. We sure don't seem to be backing down from a challenge when it comes to the schedule.
Very cool on the HOF. Little things like that make me feel like the ASUN is happy to have us.

I can't think of a more impressive "red carpet" welcome to the conference than holding their HOF induction at a school that has yet to become D1. VERY impressive. The A-Sun is banking on UNA to be a gem, not a rhinestone.

The A-Sun is banking on UNA to be a gem, not a rhinestone. What most don't know is, in 2011, when UNA decided to go D1 (finally) and when talks with conferences started, UNA talked to the OVC, SoCon, and even the Sun Belt. During that talk, the A-Sun came to UNA and offered a invite, but UNA didn't want to stay Indy in football and had to turn them down. What I would have considered is getting the indy year over with and then talking to the OVC, or SoCon about an associate membership for football. The A-Sun would have eventually made the deal with the Big South, but we would have already been through the transition and be established. (But honestly, I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason) look at the Basketball coach we would have entered D1 with if that would have happened.

Of course maybe we would have done what we ended up doing and changed basketball coaches then. But, knowing cale's thinking, he wouldn't have pulled the trigger on that anymore than he did on going D1. If there's anything good to say about him, it would be that he was an excellent roadblock to growth of athletics at UNA.

My guess is the administration was worried about difficulties with scheduling when it comes to being a football independent. There's currently only one other independent in FCS (North Dakota), and that's because they are transitioning to a new conference. I don't think it would have been as easy as, say, Notre Dame has it. When teams started playing conference games in October and November, it would have been slim pickings as to who we could face. And what if the teams available only agreed to playing us at their place? A season with 2 or 3 home games doesn't sound like much fun. Since there was no deal between the ASUN and Big South back then, and no way of knowing the deal would eventually be struck, there might have been a fear of indefinite independent status. I know we HOPED the OVC would come calling after a year or two, but again, no guarantee of that.
I'm not necessarily saying we were right not to join the ASUN back then, only that I can understand why there was hesitation.
I like how it worked out for basketball with Coach Pujol. And hopefully it will end up being a positive that Coach Willis was able to use our last D2 year to get his feet wet as head man.

The OVC was going to give us the invite until cale started making public statements saying he wasn't sure if this was the RIGHT move. That didn't give the OVC cold feet, it encased them in ice. Wouldn't you have preferred going into D1 with Bobby Wallace, a D1 coach, at the helm? He was really fired up about the chance.

I would have much preferred having Bobby during this. And the OVC was my preferred conference. So, yeah. That's disappointing on multiple fronts.
