Army joining the AAC is interesting. No trickle-down from them adding a school from a present conference means it's unlikely that CUSA adds anyone in the near future. Probably a good thing for UAC/ASUN stability. Maybe not such a great thing for Steve and his Colonels. That's OK. I've been waiting since we made overtures to the MAC in 1985.

At least we can somewhat empathize, since we watched our two biggest rivals move up twice while our administration seemed content to be a big fish in a small pond. I know it’s no consolation, but I enjoy having you guys as a conference mate.

Anyone get Matt's Extra Points?

Anyone get Matt's Extra Points? I do, no mention of UWF/VSU or ASUN. Mainly about the NEC schools moving to the MAAC and where they might land for football (CAA or Big South). Also, who might replace them from D2 in the NEC (which is mainly NE-10 possibilities). EDIT: I need to read it more thoroughly though. That was from skimming it on a break.

Did Matt ever elaborate any further on that? I was thinking as I watched the Jax State game last night how I’m not sure their fans even consider us much of a rival anymore. I think it’s fun for us because we missed playing them for so long, and because there was likely some jealousy there too (I know there was/is for me). But the truth is you HAVE to play a team almost every year to maintain some kind of true rivalry. I see fans of so many schools complaining that their fans don’t care about half the games they play. How can you, though, when it’s a team you have no history with? All that to say, I just hope the ASUN can find a way to keep some core teams together long term. I think some day it can grow into being a respected mid-major, but to do so we must have some consistency.

KSU has been talking about getting out for a long time because they think they are bigger than what they really are. So whatever... But, away from them, we add a school in the same general area, that a few of us have history with and will turn back into a rivalry soon. UWG will end up being way better for the conference than KSU in my opinion. At least they are a traditional school and not a commuter school. As much as we, EKU, APSU, and even UCA may want FBS, it may be a mute point. Why would any of us want to go to CUSA now? I tried, I really tried to get into them, and I couldnt... it's an awful product now. I actually think I would like to see the MAC have a super conference and get the Southern teams (Mid American+Mid South). But back to my point, didn't mean to wander. I don't see any major realignment in FBS other than the PAC just doing whatever with some kind of merger with the MWC. So unless someone gets an invite I don't see anyone in the ASUN going anywhere.

I agree, the FBS door may be about to close for a while. And even CUSA probably has some options. Delaware seems desperate enough to possibly take a spot. Missouri State is still out there and has expressed interest. I can see another couple of teams getting the call, but they really have zero reason to expand beyond 12. And if the MWC and PAC-2 combine, I’m not sure where any additional spots will come from. The MAC idea is interesting. If they had added WKU and MTSU, the thought of us being a part of a “southern wing” could work. But I’m not sure they’ll do it if they can’t get the Nashville market.

I do wonder with UT-Martin not getting in the playoffs with an 8-3 record is a reflection of the strength of the Big South/OVC and may reconsider joining the ASUN.

Big South down to 2 football schools. Robert Morris returning to NEC.

The Big South should just fold football...
Let the two remaining join the ASUN as full members. Be good for Queens and the Florida schools.

So, just looking at the situation with Charleston Southern and Gardner Webb,
If the ASUN can pull in West Florida, it's a situation of getting one or the other as a full membership. In that case I would vote Gardner Webb just because of facilities.
If we can't get West Florida, then go after both and get the ASUN to 14.
If we get West Florida, then the UAC will sit at 14, without West Florida, 13. (Assuming GW and CS join as associates)

According to Matt Brown, the ASUN may be reaching out to some CAA schools to gage interest. Apparently the president at Richmond is disappointed but they are in the A-10 so unless it's football only, I don't think they are moving.
College of Charleston seems to be the #1 target.
I have also heard before Matt broke this story, that William and Mary, Elon and Towson aren't too happy.
Like I've said before, the ASUN wants 14, if two of these schools join, it would do many things for the ASUN.
My optimal opinion for the ASUN is
Get College of Charleston and that puts the ASUN back in South Carolina.
Let Richmond join the UAC for football only.
That would likely make one of the other football schools, hopefully William and Mary, join the ASUN as a full member. That would get the ASUN back in Virginia.
At that point the ASUN would move way up the perception list, would be ultra competitive in all sports andwould make the ASUN be secure in football should the UAC ever break down, which I don't think will happen.
I think this could be what pushes the ASUN across the competitive line if this happens.

Chatty will not leave, if they was they would have by now. They could have joined the OVC several years ago but didn't.
They was invited by the ASUN when EKU and JSU was but declined so we got UCA.
If all it would have took to get them was inviting ETSU then I doubt the ASUN would not have done it.
That being said, the SoCon will be passed easily by the ASUN if we can land who I said.
And I don't buy the fact that a few schools are keeping the SoCon from expanding when they have said multiple times they would take Elon, Charleston Southern, W&M and Richmond if they wanted to join. If a few schools in the SoCon have that kind of power, the rest need to leave.

I realize it won't happen, but it would be cool to have UTC and ETSU in the ASUN mainly due to their proximity to Florence and other members. It would certainly help Queens out over in Charlotte just like adding UWG is going to. Chatty to Carrollton is less than 2.5 hours by car. Johnson City is on up there but less than 4 hours between them and EKU.
