Just saw that. RIP, big fella. I was in school when they got him and Una. I think he had the longest life of our lions so far.
Wonder if they'll try to find a new "couple"? My kids would definitely be sad if not. I remember PETA folks causing a stir the last time. Plus, they'll need a new trainer/caretaker with Anne Howard recently passing away.

I was told a few months ago that they were having “robust discussions” about the future of live mascots. That could be good or bad.

RIP big kitty. Loved him and Una! Also, Leo II when I was in school there.

My daughter sent it to me this morning, very sad. Leo III and sister UNA have both been big parts of daughter’s lives. I have not thought about the possibility of my daughter starting North Alabama this fall without a live Lion mascot on campus. Hope we get another brother and sister, need the companionship.

Im 42, and don’t remember UNA without a lion. I believe this decision by the university will be huge. If they remove the habitat and build a memorial, I get it. I don’t support it though. I don’t mind saying, my donations were mostly directed towards the Lion care fund. Everyone has something special about UNA that links them to the school. No lion habitat will hurt a lot of alums and donors. I think a brother/sister combo would be great again, but brothers would be cool too. Nothing wrong with having Leo IV and maybe one named Wallace, Braly, etc etc.

RIP Leo...
As for having a live lion, in my opinion, it's as big a part of UNAs identity as being the oldest, the national championships, and the beautiful campus.
Hopefully we make the move to keep the Legacy of Leo alive.
