Little rant here. I am very grateful for the cheerleaders we have at UNA and I hope they gain more participation from the crowd during our games. I know they are doing what they are told to do but, i feel great disappointment when the cheerleaders hold up signs that encourage everyone to cheer purple and "white". What school are we being asked to cheer for? Certainly not UNA. I'm a 40 year alumni of UNA and I know that our colors are purple and gold. We are stronger when we recognize who we are and appreciate our history and traditions. Athletically, all championships have been won under the colors of purple and gold. We should recognize and embrace who we are!
Guessing here but, I think this purple and white stuff is the result of some administrator trying to create their own personal legacy. No input from students, faculty, alumni, or fans. Just someone putting their personal desire above the history and traditions of UNA. One day they can look back and say, "Yeah, I did that, now the school colors are purple and white". It's not right and I will fight, fight, fight against it. I look at purple and white not as who we are but as who someone wants us to be. Being a wanna be and forgetting who we are doesn't accomplish much other than 1-10 seasons. Yeah, I don't place the blame on some of the dismal athletic results of the last few years, on our transition to D1. I place it on our emphasis on settling (wanna be) rather than trying to be the best (our tradition and history). Now, there is a new breeze wafting through the corridors and an effort to do better. It's refreshing and I will take it as a sign that we are serious when I see it reflected in a corrected cheer of purple and gold.
So, don't be surprised if the cheerleaders have to come out with a cheer of purple and white and some fellow in the crowd comes back with purple and gold. After all I am cheering for my alma mater, the University of North Alabama, and not some other place I'll call the University of Wannabe.

Our football conference alone has 3 other teams using purple and white - SFA, Abilene Christian, and Tarleton. There is zero reason for us to de-emphasize gold as much as we have over the past couple of years. At first the excuse was “well, we want to use the same shade as the academic side does”. It begs the question why we had switched to the Vegas gold in the first place, but still. Now we’ve actually had a little bit of the yellow creep in, but they are really just doing the bare minimum. The soccer team is just purple and white. Same with the volleyball team. We already know the basketball teams, unless they get new unis this year, are purple and white (or black, UGH). I wrote Looney last year about this time and he basically said “well the university has never really used that much gold”, which is either a bald-faced lie or bad information on his part. Perhaps he truly is the person behind this and is trying to convince us that gold has never been used much. I don’t know. But it just truly makes no sense and has left me bitter at the administration for a while now. I’m not sure what we can do, other than to continue to tell them how we feel. I don’t have a direct connection to anyone at the University, but for those of you that do, please keep pushing back on this.

I don't know who led this purple/white charge (Looney, Kitts, who knows) but is a misstep. Looney has only been around a couple of years and I think this ball started down the hill a little before him. Looney, being a newbie, would seem to have been parroting bad information. Anyone with 5 years of UNA history knows gold has always gone with the purple. The Lion is the king of the jungle and the purple and the gold are the colors of royalty. Differential equations are not required to add 2+2.

It’s cool to see the majorettes, Lionettes, and color guard in all gold this season.

It’s cool to see the majorettes, Lionettes, and color guard in all gold this season. Are they really? That almost makes the non-existent gold in athletic uniforms even worse. Why the inconsistency? Shouldn’t there be someone coordinating this so everyone is on the same page? Or does each team/group get to choose whether they use gold or not? It’s just so stupid we even have to have this conversation. Makes me think of the 2000s when every team started wearing black. Now the trend is to return to historic uniforms and colors, and we’re trying to eliminate one of ours.

Well, we took one on the chin yesterday. Football still has to turn the corner but, we are not as far down to the other end of the street as before. Progress is evident. While the game was disappointing yesterday, the same cannot be said for the cheerleading. Kudos for the Purple and Gold cheer!!! A true bright spot and a sign of further good things to come. I felt the old familiarity of being UNA with the recognition of the championship team and hearing the shouting out of our true colors. UNA a force to be reckoned with. Keep up the good work cheerleaders. This fan base will catch on fire the embers just need a little stirring around after being dormant for a bit.
