I'm hearing that Held may get the job... That would make sense as to why they are quiet about it. If he is hired, what are we doing? Also, Willis apparently already has a job lined up with the University or something with the state to get that 25 years for retirement. If Held is the coach then he'd better fire Steadman and get a real DC!

The only silver lining, in my eyes, to Held is that he might (MIGHT) be able to keep the best players out of the portal. Otherwise, we need a hire very soon. This is a delicate balancing act at this crucial stage of the football calendar.

I honestly don't have a clue, but if you have intentions of hiring Held, shouldn't it be done by now...
Kind of makes me think it won't be him.

I think our fan base would be less than thrilled with someone like Held. He was a HC (many years ago) at the DII and Junior college level with some moderate-level success, but all of that was in the midwest. Can we get someone at the D2 or DIAA level that has recruited the south and experienced more success? Surely this job still has a great deal of interest from your aspiring head coaches and top DC/OC types.

He won two D2 titles at Valdosta before GA Southern hired him away as OC. When that HC was fired the next year, Dean landed at UWG. They are always in the hunt for the post season.

My only concern (maybe not even a concern) about Dean is that he has only been a coach in Georgia from High school to West Georgia. He played football at Georgia Tech and with his experience and success, I'm sure many other programs have kicked the tires on him. Seems like he just wants to be in Georgia.
Other than that, I would have no issues with Dean. I would welcome him. I know Florence isn't that far from Georgia, but it's worlds apart to a homebody.

Many thought they’d never leave Valdosta because his wife had a business there. But he wanted to try out D1, I guess. It would be cool if he wanted to try a go at it as HC in FCS. His coaching record is 121-44. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Dean

Listening to Heart of a Lion podcast definitely didn’t sound like Held thought he would be here. He said he didn’t know, but wanted to make sure to tell everyone he enjoyed working with them and thought the foundation here was very good and future was bright. He said he has no idea if his time here is over or if he will be back, Looney has a big decision he has to make.

I was thinking about that last night. It’s possible a new coach would keep him on much like Willis and Campbell were kept on by Bowden and Wallace. A bit of a different situation but it’s not unheard of, especially in Florence.

I believe Held needs to be retained as OC if he doesn’t have hard feelings about not getting the head coaching job. Also would like to see complete offensive staff stay…first time I typed that for offense in a long time if ever? The production should speak to all offensive recruits. Defense on the other hand……guess you can sell immediate playing time.

No chance Held stays if he is not the head coach. That I can promise you.

Unless we are hiring a coach from a team that isn't in the playoffs or going to a bowl, it could still be several weeks before the new guy could devote his full attention to UNA. So in a scenario like that, it would be nice if we could hold on to Held (ha) and have him recruit for us while a staff is being put together. I agree with y'all that he's done a good job with what he has this year. That being said, if he is looking at FBS jobs, I can't blame the guy.
