This loss feels different. Multiple negative comments on FB and brutal TimesDaily headlines. Will it make a difference? Will they fire him in 3 weeks? From the TD write up: “I don’t think so,” defensive tackle Micah Bland said when asked if the defensive personnel has simply been overmatched this season. “It’s really not that. It comes down to discipline. We’re not as disciplined as other teams. Other teams know what they’re doing and do it very well.
“We’re not consistent enough. We have spurts, but we haven’t been consistent.”I know you can’t take one quote out of context, but what do we make of that? Is he blaming the coaches? Blaming the players themselves for not being disciplined? Then you have Willis later in the article say we didn’t match them in “intensity”, that we’ve “been competitive” until last night. I miss D2. I especially miss it if we are not planning to ever spend the money necessary for us to compete at this level. Just like last week, Willis should be fired today and an active search for the next coach started. If they plan to fire him, waiting until after the Memphis game will just be a waste of the month of November. So yeah, that’s what they’ll probably do.

I don't miss D2, you know what we would be doing if we was D2 right now? Complaining about why we have a losing record and why they haven't gotten rid of Willis. I've said it all year, we have talent, everyone knows it. We don't have DISCIPLINE, everyone knows that too. ITS A COACHING ISSUE. I think the new AD knows. Our old AD wanted to be buddies with everyone... I don't get that vibe from the new one. He's all business. That being said, I don't know if he will wait till his contract is up, or tell him to take off. On another note, I overheard a conversation about paying the next head coach, whoever it may be and whenever it may be, they agreed they should start at 300k... And the athletic budget is supposed to be set to go up.

He’s had 5 free years to basically build up a team to be competitive in FCS, and in our first year of conference eligibility we are 1-7. You can’t make any excuses for this guy, he’s a terrible head coach and an absolute fuggin loser! By being lazy and hiring him Linder and UNA has set this program back another 5 years

And the athletic budget is supposed to be set to go up. I don’t really miss D2, though I’m very disappointed we’re losing both JSU and KSU. I miss the rivalries we had with Valdosta and Delta. Games you could look forward to. As of now, we really have zero rivalries and barely any relationships with the teams in our conference. But, it is what it is. Winning these games would certainly make me feel better. I know you’ve been saying the athletic budget will increase. I pray you’re right. But man, it’s hard to be optimistic at the moment. There is zero reason for Willis to be coach on Monday morning. That would be the first and best thing to do to show the fans they’re serious about being competitive. If they like him so much, let him coach out the rest of the year. Not like it makes much of a difference at this point. But a message needs to be sent. One that says we will not accept being an FCS doormat.

I think that the one way Looney and the administration will see that the fans hate fed up will be the next 2 Saturdays. I believe that the attendance to games will be lower than average. Do the players deserve it? No but that’s what happens when you don’t perform. I completely agree that Willis and Campbell should be fired Monday and you let Held coach out the rest of the year. Start your search now and you might can get a jump on a coach that may have offers later on.
Going D1 was a mistake. You can say that they had done everything at the D2 level and there’s more money and opportunity at D1 but now you have no natural rivalries. 75% of the programs will never be able to compete for a national championship. You’re just competing for conference championships and maybe a win every now and then in the NCAA tournament of whatever sport that makes it. I’d say football has been the worst sport and set back the farthest after going D1 and that should be the main priority to drive success as it’s the money maker. Football doesn’t own their own stadium. Still have the D2 coaches and recruiting D2 players. Watch how they recruit. Most of the kids that get offers or commit to UNA, UNA is either their only offer or only D1 offer. Yes we get some kids that have multiple FCS offers like Powell, but the most only have 1.

People might say they miss D2 but they really miss winning. But, it you’ll recall, Willis went 5-5 our last season of D2 football. Yet, what is winning in D2? Why handicap our student-athletes who want the chance to play in March Madness or the CWS just because the alumni enjoy the possibility that of playing for lessor titles?
Linder fumbled the ball on football during the transition. Period.
Interesting mention on the football FB page was to hire Chip Long as HC. I’d kinda forgotten about him. He’s the current GA Tech OC.

I hear you about D1 and player opportunities, and you’re also right about missing the winning. I think what frustrates me the most, besides our administration looking completely inept, is that we unfortunately made this transition at a terrible time. With no stadium, the pandemic delaying the half-baked plan we had for one, NIL, the transfer portal, our biggest rival moving up and leaving us AGAIN… it’s a lot to process. No way any of us could’ve predicted this stuff in 2018 - I get that. But it’s all combined to make me feel like we are so far behind everyone else at our level that it will take years to catch up. I think Looney has done a good job so far. I hope he sticks around for a while. My question is, do the people around him really care about being a successful D1 school? Will some of our fans finally start to see that just being D1 isn’t good enough?

It’s pretty obvious to most that UNA is D1 because Steve Pierce had “small man” syndrome and was hell bent on dragging the program (years too late) to D1. Well, now he needs to sell a lot more insurance and pony up the funds to not be an embarrassment. Let’s just call a spade a spade here.

Any chance Hudspeth would leave the beach for 300k? I know the history there isn’t great but he’s a winner..

They are probably unemployed once a new coach is named.

He and that dream staff have Gulf Shores at 9-1 ranked 4th in 5A going into the final weekend of the regular season. Yes, they moved down a class this season but he had already turned them around in 6A last year. If you look at their old records, this is nothing short of miraculous. www.maxpreps.com/al/gulf-shores/gulf-shores-dolphins/football/

The problem I have is with leadership that is short sighted and timid. You don't want to be left behind? Well it's time for UNA to choose to control its own destiny and quit the whining. Get your own stadium. Do it! Want to compete in D1? Do what it takes and more. Do more so that if greener pastures are one day in the picture you can say I'm ready. Strive to be the best and do not settle for mediocrity. It's easy to say I can't but you advance by saying I can and following up.
