FBS doesn’t allow football only conferences. To move up, all these schools would be leaving the WAC/ASUN and forming a new conference. Yep. Sort of the story between the lines of his comments. First off I think this will be a good FCS conference. I would be surprised if it ever went FBS. How i took the interview. He said as a league they would move up. I took that as schools staying in ASUN and WAC and just being FBS football conference. To be FBS conference 80% of football teams have to be full members of sponsoring conference.

Brandon’s post on the ASUN board on CSNbbs: The way I understand it is, because the WAC was FBS before, the NCAA will allow them back to FBS provided they show continuity. The way it has been explained to me is, the WAC and ASUN put football schools together in FCS for a few years (also to my understanding, the past two seasons will count). When Tarleton and Utah Tech complete their transitions, the WAC will accept all ASUN football schools as full members. At that point, the non football schools in the WAC will have found homes in other conferences (some going to the ASUN) at that point, a few more schools will(should) join the WAC. Also to my understanding, it has to be called the WAC the duration of FCS to continue continuity.

From near the end of this article: While Austin Peay's ASUN membership remains strong, there could be a scenario in which the Govs are looking to join an FBS conference in the coming years. Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State will join Conference USA, and Harrison said he'd like for Peay to have a conference affiliation that makes sense regionally. But he didn't rule out the possibility of playing as an independent in the FBS. "We want to be in an FBS conference," Harrison said. "Don't get me wrong, financially, we're not going to try to join a conference in the northeast. We're very happy in the ASUN. We're not overjoyed that we lost two members as soon as we walked in the door. But we'll see where this goes." Austin Peay's Gerald Harrison wants Govs in FBS football by 2025. Here's the plan www.theleafchronicle.com/story/sports/college/apsu/2022/12/02/austin-peay-football-fbs-gerald-harrison-athletics-director/69696103007/

First UCA when the ASUN football thing was going to be announced, now SFA coach and APSU... EKU and UNA may as well come out with it as well.

ASUN falling apart... I think if UNA announced it right now, people would laugh at them. Their first FCS season was 1-10, and they're still playing in a high school football stadium.

I wish they'd just announced the merged FCS conference at least.

I know at the end of the day the answer to why move up is "because money", but how many more can move up to FBS until the pie is so divided that there's no benefit to it?
All I want is for UNA to have a schedule that allows us to play teams from around the southeast. I like being in FCS since we (theoretically at least) have a shot at one day winning a national championship. We would have 0.0% chance of that in FBS. I guess the 12-team playoff would make the odds more like 0.5%, but still.
Maybe the best thing to do is to just re-combine FBS and FCS and let teams play whoever the heck they want. Let bowls invite whoever they want. Have a "whoever's left" playoff. Maybe then everyone would be happy. But, probably not.

At the end of the day, we don't know what the landscape is going to resemble in a few years... The officials in the schools and conferences have a better grasp on it than we do. That being said, most of the premis of UNA moving to D1 was to be around rivals and peers. APSU, EKU, JSU and UCA and a few others, are rivals and peers. If UNA let's all those go up to FBS, and say, the new look NCAA relegated everyone who isn't in FBS by a certain date back to D2, then money and effort was wasted. Now I'm not saying that will happen, I'm just saying there seems to be a concensus that think that will happen.

This guy has done a bunch of realignment videos. This one on how the WAC could become an FBS conference. Doesn't address CFP access or money. youtu.be/UJTBs5oGMNc

This guy has done a bunch of realignment videos. This one on how the WAC could become an FBS conference. Doesn't address CFP access or money. youtu.be/UJTBs5oGMNcThis is what people keep forgetting. The bold statement in the bylaws that said or a previous FBS conference... (not exact quote but the same.) That's exactly what I've been told. As long as all members meet criteria, it can (and from what I'm told) will happen. That is if the remaining schools involved don't get impatient and go to another invite. My best guess is the WAC/ASUN football conference will be a year or two, (that time period will be for the schools that need to, to have ample time to add sports, or do whatever it needs to... then they make the move... The only downside I see, is, all schools involved will have to go through the transition, but at least it's all of us, and can still win the conference, just no bowls.

Also to the point of the video... he said that specifically was talking about the WAC, but I don't think that's entirely true...
For example, if the MVC wanted to do the same thing, technically, by the words of the bylaws they can. They was 1-A(FBS) for a long time, unless, they gave their football rights up to the Big 8, which was a new conference consisting of MVC schools.
The Big East is an example of that, the current Big East can't play FBS football as a conference. Why? They let the football rights change to the AAC.
Two conferences have kept their rights, WAC and South West Conference. The Big 12 uses the Big 8, hints the Big in the name.
So technically, FBS is down 2 conferences.
That brings the question in my mind, who would buy the SWC football rights? A group of schools like NDSU, SDSU, Montana, Montana State and so on?
