With Pujol being a defensive guy at heart, does he allow one of the assistants to be the "offensive coordinator"? I probably sound ignorant here of how the bench operates during a game. I'm assuming one of the assistants is in charge of implementing our offensive sets, right? Long story short, we may need to take a look at that assistant and decide if he needs to be replaced. I know dealing with the transition is part of the reason for our record, but Xs and Os are fair game to be judged if you ask me. Has nothing to do with the transition...(Bellarmine) it has everything to do with we can't shoot.

I agree, but to be fair, Bellarmine was in much better shape before their move up than we were in Champagne’s final few years. I’ve always said the top teams in D2 are as good as a lot of mid-major D1 teams. That being said, Pujol definitely needs to make some changes in some capacity.

Agreed but have we improved over Champagne's era? I'm struggling to answer that which is a major problem.

Making the tournament final last year was nice, but it’s not like anyone really thought we were the second best team in the conference. I do think without some of the injuries this year, and especially with Manny Littles and Mervin James on this team, we could’ve been a whole lot better. But, injuries and transfers happen. It’s up to the coaches to figure out how to deal with it. This staff hasn’t done a good enough job, for sure. Pujol at least will be here next year. If we don’t show some improvement, I would suggest moving on. What’s frustrating is seeing a team like Samford hire a high school coach (admittedly a very good one), and immediately become a much better team.

Lions hit 12 threes and blow out UCA tonight. UNA will be the #2 seed in the west with a bye and home game in the quarterfinals.

Really was not expecting the Lady Lions to be the stronger basketball team this year?? Tiber and staff are pulling off quite a few victories and have a chance in the tournament to be a force. The problem is it will be the tournament…we have not faired well on the Ladies side yet. The men will be a good practice team for FGCU. Really confused by our recruiting coming in next year? All point guards? Maybe we expect Ortiz to transfer closer to home? I get Brim will not be here, but honestly should not be hard to replace him. Brim really tried to be good, just wasn’t. We need a really good player at the 4 to be productive next year. A tall enough player that can average 10-12 points a game with rebounds and we could have a chance. All guards that you hope get hot from deep. Hopefully we land a transfer this time around…

I'd hate to see him go, but it would be hard to blame him if he wanted to spend one last year on a team that has a better chance at the tournament. So perhaps he's informed the coaches he will be moving on. Who knows. Take out a few head-scratching losses by the ladies, and they would have a winning record. Still have a chance for one if they can make a run in the tournament.

And actually, the men’s team has only won one more ASUN tournament game than the women and the women have multiple wins in a post-season tournament. The women’s program is pretty far ahead of the men in this transition. But, of course, they kept their coach and moved a full squad of talent to D1. The men hired a new coach and gutted the team.

What’s frustrating is seeing a team like Samford hire a high school coach (admittedly a very good one), and immediately become a much better team. The Bulldogs had six wins last season in the first year of coach Bucky McMillan, and the victory against Furman was number 20 of Year Two. Samford has only had two other 20-win seasons in school history. The Bulldogs (20-9, 10-7 in the Southern Conference) complete their regular season with an away game against Chattanooga (23-7, 13-4) on Saturday (3 p.m.) before traveling to Asheville, N.C., for the SoCon tournament (March 3-6). www.al.com/sports/2022/02/samfords-turnaround-just-the-start-for-bucky-mcmillan.html?outputType=amp

Obviously not every coaching changes leads to results like that, but it does prove that in basketball you do NOT need 4+ years of building a program to develop a winning team, culture, etc. In fact, I'd argue that if a coach does NOT see those kind of results by Year 4, he (or she) likely never will.
