I could probably just put this in the football section, but in reality, it's not just a football thing.
My sons mini football team (ages 6-8) won their league championship this year. The Music City bowl is the sponsor of the league and many others in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Alabama region. The champions get to attend the game and do various activities as a reward.
As we were sitting in Nissan Stadium, and watching the game, we were seated next to Louisvilles band. They were a good band, but not as many members as I expected out of a P5 program. Mississippi State had more members, but still not as big as I expected, and neither sounded as good as I would expect. I'm not hating on them, just something I noticed. Reality is, UNA has a better band than both, the only thing I wish we would do that both of them do is, play more during the actual game...
The other thing I noticed was fans. First thing is, both fan bases that I was around were very cool. Even the ole "Blue hairs" would get off their butts and get as loud as they could when it was warranted. They would even stand up and encourage the other fans to join them.
Second, several, and I mean several fans from both sides saw me and either said Roar Lions or Go Lions... like usual, being who I am, I had on my Lion gear, one guy from UL made it a point to have a conversation about Bellarmine, the ASUN and UNA playing UL in baseball this year.
Several Mississippi State fans approached me and said they are glad UNA finally decided to move to D1. All of them mentioned us beating Ole Piss, I mean Miss in baseball. Apparently, there are a lot of UNA followers in Mississippi.
Anyway, just things I thought were interesting.

That sounds like a fun experience and great memories to share with your son. I was wearing a UNA sweatshirt when I went out for a little while yesterday. It always disappoints me when I don’t get any comments. I don’t think as many people from this area (Chattanooga) are as familiar with us. There aren’t really any D2 schools in this area outside of Lee, and they don’t seem to have a very large fan base. I think all the players we’ve had from Mississippi and the D2 schools there have probably made MSU and Ole Miss fans more aware of us. Louisville fans will be, too, after we beat them in baseball this year.
Totally agree about our band. When the new stadium happens I hope plenty of thought is given to showcasing them. So much of the piped-in nonsense could be cut out and replaced with the POD.

What's funny is, the piped in music at the bowl game, the bands would just play over them... I thought it was hilarious.

I've always thought Alabama's band does one of the best jobs nationally in the stands. The atmosphere in Bryant Denny has always been good even when they were mediocre in the 90s. The band is a huge part of that. Of course, it helps when the fans get into it. UNA has always had "golf clappers" even when we won three straight national titles. It seemed the only time they would get excited was for the title games.
I think the Athletic Department could continue to do better with the game atmosphere and fan support management in almost every aspect of every sport. Gotta follow the times and they seem to lag behind about a decade. Overall, I was pleased with the football game I attended but it doesn't compare to most D1 football atmospheres in the south.

Just remember: the band doesn't always determine how often the band plays. There are a lot of factors at play on game day that is scripted out for all beforehand. Well, someone needs to change our script then...
