East Tennessee With UT-Chattanooga and Austin Peay State would be...Great !! I think IF Chattanooga and ETSU were coming, Western Carolina would be as well. Don't think they'd allow themselves to be left as the only state public school left in the SoCon (VMI and Citadel are public, but run more like privates). And if the ASUN and Ted Gumbart somehow pull of that coup, there will be a LOT of people on the internet eating crow after saying "no school will leave the SoCon for your crappy conference!".

Western Carolina would be great too. The ASUN just got ALOT stronger with the 3 we just picked up. I would not be surprised if North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast are not reconsidering starting up football after initially putting it on the back burner. We shall see.

If we get West Florida, I think that would make North Florida consider it more. I really dont think FGCU has a real desire to add football. They publicly stay against it too much.

North Florida already has a 10 k seat on campus stadium that they use for soccer. Easily expanded with seating on opposite side of current seating. Very nice facility. Easily adaptable for football. Yes, agree that if West Florida comes onboard, North Florida would light the fuse.

Last Fall when word broke about EKU and JSU leaving the ovc, I spoke with the AD at UT Martin about the future of the Conference. His comments really surprised me at the time. He said that there were two paths for the OVC. Consider joining the ASun in some sort of mega conference. 2. Find 2 new football playing members. He said the 2nd option would be much more difficult and they were actively recruiting schools at the time. He also mentioned as many other people have, that the landscape of college athletics will be drastically changed over the next 2-3 years.

I'm not sure how a mega-conference would work but who knows? Also, I agree that the landscape of college athletics are about to see major changes. It's been coming for years. The pandemic just gave everyone a reason to finally make it happen.

I think that my takeaway is there are a lot of schools that like the proactive nature of the ASUN and would be interested in joining or at least strongly consider.

Just found out both UNA and KSU was apparently approached by the OVC over a year ago about joining. Both said no thanks.
So that means, over a year ago, the ASUN was pretty sure this would happen...

A year ago was that crazy announcement from the ASUN and Gumbart about forming a mega-conference and then breaking UNA, KSU, and a few others off into the UAC.

The ironic part is, if the OVC had us and Kennesaw, and I assume that means JSU and EKU wouldn't be leaving - that's a pretty darn good conference. On the surface you would think that would've been very appealing to both us and KSU.
Obviously there had to be word leaking out from JSU and EKU even this time last year that they were unhappy. Add that to the fact that I bet we prefer our Olympic sports playing a lot of road games in Florida over the lower midwest, and it sounds like an easy decision to stay.
If the ASUN is able to bring in Austin Peay, the OVC as a football conference will be extremely weak going forward.

Our AD said in the press conference after the announcement that they had met with the ASUN January of 2020. So it would not surprise me if the OVC queries were in reaction to that.

Ted Gumbart is either a fantastic salesman, or you guys had grievances with the OVC before the COVID stuff. Am I wrong? I know y'all have an eventual goal of moving to FBS, but I'm guessing there's more to this move than just that (and I'll go on the record of saying this whole "move to FBS as a conference" idea is a fantasy). The OVC administration is really looking out of touch in this whole deal. Either way, I'm excited about being in a conference with EKU. I've tried to do my research on your university since all of this has went down. Richmond seems to be similar to Florence, in size if nothing else. Hopefully I can make it up there for some games eventually.
