From D1.ticker:
Extra Points purveyor Brown writes on the latest developments connected to the ASUN-WAC mashup: “Oliver Luck told me the DI Council is scheduled to discuss the issue again later this month, and that the WAC-ASUN plans to ask for a waiver [to the moratorium on single-sport conferences]. I’m not saying it’s impossible that the league gets that waiver, but right now, I think the smart money is that it won’t happen….at least this month. [...] I’m honestly still trying to better understand why administrators outside the ASUN/WAC are reluctant to grant a waiver. I’ve heard some industry people speculate that it may make more sense for the NCAA to deliver more clear guidelines about what it means to be FBS or FCS before opening the proverbial floodgates, and will certainly be pushback among FBS leaders if any FCS league tries to join FBS as a group. But I’ve also heard many an AD privately wonder if more regional, sport-specific conferences for Olympic sports would make more financial and logistical sense.” Brown goes on to note that the league’s current membership seems stable, “right this second” & that no individual member is an immediate FBS candidate, per sources.

I think if this group can stay together, most as aspirational peers and others as foundational peers, it will be in everyone's best interest.
The way I see it for the single sport conference in FCS, it's going to happen. It's just formality at this point.
Moving to FBS as a group, is a short term no go.
What I've been told is the NCAA has told them they need to see a collective effort, as a group to not only be able to stay together, but grow together by means of financial, marketing and facilities. If those things can grow in all schools, then they would reevaluate and see where they stand.
Despite the back and forth on the WAC being grandfathered in FBS, the "Conference" (ASUN/WAC group) was told by the NCAA that they WILL take the fact that the WAC was FBS into consideration. The NCAA also told them IF this does happen, they may instill a moratorium on any more FCS to FBS and even D2 to D1 for a long time. (With special wavers like the St Thomas deal excluded)
Back to my opinion
I really like both the WAC and ASUN in all sports... I think there is more partnership coming in non football things, like a basketball challenge and baseball events.
Both conferences have been on the verge of ruin and have pulled off of the bottom.
I would love to see both keep who they have, establish an identity with the current schools, and get better.

I understand what they are saying... but if an AQ spot goes to whomever comes out of the group, Now if they aren't going to give an AQ, then I get it. But by giving the AQ to this group, it acts as a conference. Personally, I think Matt and others that are trying to get information about it is getting confused on the FCS and FBS thing... I don't see what the deal is if they already have 3 football only conferences. MVFC, Pioneer and the CAA acts as a stand alone football conference. There shouldn't be an issue. I think when they ask the questions, the people they ask think they are talking FBS.

We'll see if they decide to approve it as an official single-sport conference this month or re-visit it in the summer. I'm curious if this is why we haven't heard much more about the OVC/Big South football deal becoming an official conference. They are referred to as an association or partnership.

Know it is not our conference, but would like to say maybe one day….Sun Belt? ESPN did a nice write up on the conference. There is Troy and South Alabama from our state and next door is Southern Mississippi. We are surrounded by that next tier conference….hard to recruit against. Troy finished ranked last year….easy to sell to recruits. South Alabama won 10 games…also easy sell.

Be nice if Sun Belt would add UNA and EKU...
