Reading the posts and thinking back on the game. I also run the whole game over in my mind for the entire drive home. My wife knows I do this after every game. 27 is special. I couldn’t imagine how bad this team would be without him. Yes the oline is better, but so many times a run play should be a loss, see Driggers carries, Powell finds a way to make it a big gain if not a score. The guy behind me last night got it. 27 has to be in on every big offensive play, decoy, worked to get Walters a TD run, or not. The 3rd and 13 or 14 yard run where 3 defenders should have stopped Powell yet he does what he does and scampers for over 20 and a first down……are exactly why.
Lacey has a ton of potential, he had a few drops last night which has been uncharacteristic of him this year. He has a great heart and want to with running skills and fantastic high point receiving ball skills. He has the speed to get open. TK has the speed to get open. I didn’t see it from Hall, he can not separate at this level. Hall does block very well for a receiver. I would like to see Warfield more than 18, he seems to separate better off the line just watching things last night. 67 played well in the few minutes he played, big ol dude right there.
I am confused and disappointed in the defense this far along in the season not knowing their assignments? We watched simple double stacked receiver alignments confusing our defense to the point of the fastest receiver by Govs, aka Flops, being covered by a linebacker? The unfortunate part of this was that happened back to back to back plays? We do not know how to adjust? I did notice Steadman on the sideline instead being up in the box. I haven’t noticed that in other games. Didn’t work….. but we did hold them to less than 40. Did that break a trend? Freshman Ponder linebacker played in the game as 32, which on the roster shows Pope the back. He has great size and once more comfortable with D1 game speed looks like the lone possible linebacker bright spot for the future. The others resume is too bad to back. We have 1 corner with confidence, 15 Peters. The rest have zero confidence or abilities for this level. We have to replace both safeties for next year, haven’t seen a backup there that impresses. Two corners are needed same can be said for at least 2 real linebackers, and 2 defensive lineman. Bland gets double a lot and so that should give us a win somewhere, doesn’t happen that way. Hate the 3-3-5 defense by the way, we get gashed by the run, pass, or improvised play.
Special teams still a disaster. Punt blocked that took forever? The onside kick was a great effort and execution by the kicker alone really.
Coaching was more of the same. Offense was a let down and I feared that with Held trying to do too much. The penalties were at absolute awful times, never a good time. Pinned deep at the 4 and give 15 yards for being stupid? Gain first down in the sneak, but offense wasn’t set. Punt. We have the ball 3 times in a row inside the 50 or once just outside of it and never threatened FG range? Great start, nothing from end of first to the halftime and that carried over through to the third. Uggh. We didn’t turn it over till late. We also do not get turnovers. One in this game could have been the difference. Does this team get a D1 win this year? One week left really for a chance at it. We will be there. Cheering our guts out again.
