That makes sense to me. I was wondering how a whole conference could move up from FCS to FBS.
I have no idea if Chattanooga is looking to make the move or not. Our AD was on "Chat with the Mocs" lately and discussed a potential move, but ended up saying that a big part of the decision was sports other than football, and also NCAA tournament money. He said the SoCon was the best fit for Chattanooga for now, but of course I wouldn't expect him to say anything else until an agreement and announcement was made.
I have been told without doubt that there is negotiation between the ASUN and Chattanooga.
Chattanooga is the 6th school the ASUN wants but they also want another for 7, but Nooga is the goal right now.
I'm still up in the air about the FBS thing... Honestly it seems a bit much for all involved. I would be happy staying in FCS (unless the landscape will change so much that FCS isn't D1 anymore.)
I've thought for a while now that the FBS thing is a big misunderstanding. I think the ASUN promised the new teams (and I guess us and KSU) that *IF* one were to attempt to move up as an independent, like Liberty, the ASUN would guarantee they keep their spot for Olympic sports. Of course, Liberty had to sue the NCAA to be able to move up that way. I'm not sure if any other team could or would even want to move up as an independent, since they lose out on conference payouts.
The ASUN probably assumed that once the football conference is established, with all the teams being competitive and relatively close to each other, the schools would be pretty content to remain FCS for a while.
All that being said, there seems to be a good relationship between the ASUN and the WAC. I wouldn't be at all surprised that if the WAC were to one day be allowed to return to FBS, they would be the ultimate destination for any ASUN team wanting to move up as well.
