I get a feeling that there is going to be a Big change in D1 football structure soon. Dont really know how or what it will look like, but after the WAC and the ASUN thing, I have a theory... (nothing fact or anything i have heard)
I think, D1 football is about to literally be D1 football.... no more division. Either you are D1 or your not.
Reason being, the split was supposed to help, BUT it has made it worse in my opinion. They split first, University and College divisions, then D1-D2. Then 1a and 1aa what turned into FBS and FCS.
The 1a- 1aa would have been fine. But all of a sudden, FBS FCS, yeah, we know, same thing, different name. I think this is where the problem starts.
Since then, FCS has been good, but a lot of moving up to FBS has happened. Not saying those schools shouldn't have, I have always thought UNA and several others should have never been D2, but that's not the topic. But some of those schools have been successful, others have not. But the fact is, they have their goals as a football program. Were in lies the problem is, among FBS there has been a divide, but that divide has been put forth, not by the NCAA, not by the schools, but by the Media... the first mention of "P5" and "G5" was by ESPN. ESPN has split FBS.
So what I think is about to happen, in some form is FBS will just be FBS. No P5 or G5 talk. There will be new schools and conferences in FBS, WAC, ASUN, maybe Big Sky and MVFC.(or a combination of the two)
There will be FCS football but it will be different. There will be schools that dropped from FBS, some will drop football, a few FCS will move to D2 (I think the NCAA are about to have some rules change for football divisions)
FCS is probably going to look a lot like the old D2 days without us and others of course. (If this actually happens)
FBS, who knows, I have heard a radio sports channel in Knoxville the other day talking about this same thing, kinda, and said he is hearing the playoffs will include all conferences champions eventually. So, maybe....
Just dont know how I feel about change right now....
Sorry that got long.
