Pujol seems like a good guy. Just hasn't shown me much as a basketball coach. We literally have no offensive scheme. It's all just backyard ball playing. We need to score some points next season. I'm not going to pretend to know about basketball schemes... that said, I'm my mind, when you miss more wide open shots than you make, that's the problem. They have shots for days, but either rush them, or just cant shoot as well as they need to. The scheme is to be fast paced and wear down the opponents. It's not working.

I think Pujols has potential to do very well. The recruiting class after this year will be vital to what we can do in conference and in state. Lot of competition for top to land any of top 30 recruits in state. We will have to keep some of these local players that are going elsewhere like Liberty and Lipscomb. North Alabama is actually very competitive in a time that we have every reason not to be. So that is encouraging we are finishing higher in a basketball conference with quite a few thoroughbred’s. Blackmon when confident is a star. If Littles can continue to develop in the post as an offensive threat and James shows growth from freshman to sophomore year we could be a real threat next year. I have no clue what we are getting in Abdul Ahmad other than size. I hope we have an offensive perimeter player coming in to help. Anderson can shoot it, but can’t be a liability on defensive end.

Pujol, like his mentor Anthony Grant, emphasizes a strong defensive game. When it works, like say the system Tony Bennett has at Virginia, you can win and win big. But it’s a little like a football team that has a great defense and mediocre talent on the offensive side. The defense can win a lot of games for you, but if they have an off-day, the offense can’t bail them out.
I always felt like Grant had enough talent at Bama to win bigger than he did. The team with JaMychal Green, for one example. This past year with Dayton shows how one great player (Obi Tippin) can make the system work. Dayton was something like 12th in scoring offense and still top 50 in defense. Obviously Obi Tippins aren’t an easy get for a program like ours, but we just need a guy or two that can take over games at the ASUN level and I think we could do very well.
Of course, this is assuming Pujol is also on the same level of Grant as a coach. Is he? I don’t know. I didn’t think much of Grant after he bombed at Bama, but it seems like he figured things out. And Pujol is still young as a head coach. I think most guys deserve at least 4 years to prove themselves. With our transitional “probation”, I’m sure the University will give him even longer.

I like Grant... Sorry to all the basketball fans for Bama, but if it ain't football, the best that will happen there is the occasional couple of wins in the NCAA tournament and a hand full of NITs. Bama is not going to let basketball outshine football. Like I said about Pujols style, we need a couple of guys that can really shoot, especially in transition, that's when this offense shines.

Dang it, we will not beat Samford again for awhile. Dude can flat coach. I was told this would happen a couple of weeks ago, good hire. In his second season, Bucky-ball and the Bulldogs have won their first-ever SoCon regular season title. Wow. What a quick turnaround!

I was reading that Ole Miss might have some interest in Bucky for their position. Not a given, but he definitely has bigger jobs in the south starting to notice him, it seems.

At least we don’t have to worry about any bigger schools coming after our basketball coaches……

From AL.com: — Bucky Ball is rolling again at Samford. The Bulldogs (13-2, 2-0 SoCon) started conference play with major victories against Chattanooga and the Citadel. www.al.com/auburnbasketball/2024/01/goodman-auburn-samford-uab-troy-making-hardwood-noise.html

Great hire for Samford. Coaching those guys up. Plus all those players in Birmingham area know what kind of high school coach he was too. I watch our guards shoot less than 60% on free throws and think how are we going to beat anyone? We were at home against a team that had won 3 games against lower level competition…what does that make us?
