Saw that this morning.
Here’s my thought. Has the name been officially changed? Not to my knowledge. I did a search of UNA.edu and the pages concerning the band never mentioned a name. Maybe the University doesn’t want to make a decision. I don’t know.
Regardless, the article is written for a public/fanbase that knows them as the Pride of Dixie. So it’s not the best move to call them something different and not acknowledge why you’re doing it. Maybe it was a mistake on the writer’s part. Maybe he wasn’t aware of the name and someone with the band told him that. I don’t know. I guess it could be an agenda, but that’s assuming the worst.
I just think the University needs to make an official decision. Some people will be upset either way, but at least clear the air so we all can understand what’s happening.

I love the new nickname!
"The Pride" was used by the band some in the 80s. Yet, it, and the Pride of Dixie, were/are unofficial. The Pride of Dixie was simply what the band director in 1965 started calling them. There was no official decision, referendum, or declaration. They changed it up some in the 80s but ultimately went back to POD until now.
Names change, especially when they're unofficial nicknames. It's not a big deal except for the folks trying to make it one. Even Dolly Parton changed the name of her Stampede show for whatever reason. No one boycotts Dolly.
I also notice that since we joined D1, that it's no longer UNA. It's "North Alabama". Even the pre-recorded tradition announcement when the team entered the field the other night had replaced, "Your UNA Lions" with "Your North Alabama Lions". I think this could all be part of a D1 branding scheme.

I would prefer “Pride of Dixie” to remain, but understand the reasoning for changing it. I think you have to be careful saying it’s “not a big deal”, though. Traditions are important. People like me, at 36, have literally never heard another name for the band. Thirty years of doing something one way doesn’t mean you can’t change, but it’s bound to upset people when you do. I do think they should make a name official, whatever it is. It would prevent situations where people think a newspaper article writer is misinformed, keep some fans from having false hope that once “current band director/president/whoever” is gone the POD name will come back, etc. And heck, if there’s some good publicity to get out of it, that would be nice, too.

I'm 45 and have also never heard it called something else as I didn't attend much in the 80s when they called it "The Pride" some. Yet, it had only started being called "The Pride of Dixie" 7 years before I was born. So, to the people just a bit older than us, that was a new nickname. It's not a big deal TO ME, I guess is what I'm saying. I was actually in the band for four years (during the title run) and understand that rebranding happens - especially when it's not even an official name. Heck, even the Mormon Tabernacle Choir recently rebranded to be The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square after being called the former name for over 150 years. I don't know if it's official but I just listened to a video of halftime last week and he clearly said "The Marching Pride" after their opener.

It wasn't the original name of the band. It was added two years after Wallace stood in the door of UA to block black students from entering and during the anniversary year of the end of the Civil War. It was also three years before UNA became the first white school in the state to allow black players on the team.
If we're talking "tradition", it's best to add some historical context.

I like "Marching Pride" since a pride is a group of lions.

I like "Marching Pride" since a pride is a group of lions. Yep, it’s not a terrible compromise. But I always enjoyed the double entendre with “Pride of Dixie”. Oh well. As someone who doesn’t like change too much, it stinks, but I’ll get over it.

I think we should call them the "Pride of Bama Marching Lions" Believe it or not, the University of Alabama has trademarked the word "Bama".

I hesitate to bring it up, since it can be a topic that elicits some strong emotions, but...
I have to imagine "Pride of Dixie" is now dead.
After thinking about it occasionally, even since this thread was active, I think my vote for a new name would be the "Pride of Lions Marching Band". I feel that would be a reasonable change.

Last season, they were officially branded as the Marching Pride of North Alabama (MPNA) but used "The Pride" during the show just before the first big horn hit.
Although, I chatted with the band director when I attended the final home game and he said they were still announced as The Pride of Dixie at every exhibition. Haha. Just out of habit, I'm sure.

It's fucking bullshit how this went down. Kitts needs to be fired. And so does Lloyd Jones for having a pussy instead of a pair and not standing up to Kitts.
