Continuing a conversation from a football thread that took a band/drum corps turn...
I actually really enjoyed Colts this year. Thought they did a great job of telling a story and it was a nice balance between the "old" (marching and playing like "back in my day") and the "new" (costumes, props, electronics). Compare that to Bluecoats...phenomenally entertaining...but it didn't really feel like "drum corps"...more like Cirque du Soleil on a football field. Amazingly well-performed and executed, excellent show design, very entertaining...just not really "drum corps" to me.

Totally hear ya. Although, I was a huge Bluecoats fan throughout the season. It might have something to do with UNA playing Eleanor Rigby in 2017. Lol. I was majorly disappointed when the Blue Devils edged them out.
But, I also am not a fan of where drum corps has gone. I grew up watching on PBS in the 80s, so all the electronics, props, singing, et. al. are "meh" to me.

Enjoyed Bluecoats, wanted them to win, but also prefer the 80's and '90s style. The new style doesn't really appeal to me much, although I understand that it's not really "for me" anymore...the people getting involved in it now enjoy it, and they're still working their butts off every day out in the sun just like I did.
Did you happen to see Scouts this year? They had a very "old-school" show, although it could have been executed better. Also, I posted on facebook about our "small world" connnection...Sid wants to know who you are now.

I went to the Atlanta show last year and got to be on the sideline for some of the performances. I was blown away by the athleticism and stamina it takes for those performers. That really started to sink in more this year after I watched so many shows on Flo Marching. I'll bet those kids are still recovering! Lol. Of course, they're young, but wow. I saw the Scouts several times and enjoyed it once it got cleaner near the end of the year. I loved watching so many times and familiarizing myself with each corps production way more than I'd ever been in the past. I even enjoyed watching Open Class and some of the SoundSport groups!

Just missed you. 96 to 2000. You probably marched with Dallas Burgess (trombone probably) then? He marched Colts with me in '96 (he and I both played Baritone)...even stayed at my house for a couple of breaks during the summer (back then we'd have a couple days off once or twice during the summer). He took a year or so off and then marched Madison Scouts for a year or two.

I actually found a photo with all 3 of us in it. It's a large part of the corps (Colts) at the end of a rehearsal in 1996. I've labeled myself, Sid, and Dallas, for reference. Sid has a white "fisherman's hat" with a red band around it. I'm wearing a white hat with a grey bill, and Dallas is wearing a black hat.
