Story here: Dixie State to join the WAC. Believe it it or not, this school is in Utah, ha. They have been a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The interesting thing is them choosing to play as an independent. There is talk that the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) would like to offer football again. However, currently New Mexico State is the only football playing school in the WAC, and they are FBS Independent. They likely have no interest in moving down. For the WAC to be a viable football conference, they’d have to poach several schools from another conference (such as the Big Sky), have several of their current schools start football programs, or invite a few more current D2 schools. The other idea would be a WAC football-only conference, such as what the Missouri Valley does. But again, there aren’t a lot of options. There has been talk of D2 Tarleton State moving up at some point, and even discussion of them joining the ASUN. I assume the WAC would be preferable for them, though, if it finds enough football schools. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find Dixie State on a future schedule. With them being independent (at least for a while), and Big South schools having more opportunities for non-conference games, I assume DSU will find itself traveling to the southeast at least a time or two.

North Dakota is still an independent this coming football season. They were in the Big Sky. They are currently playing a Big Sky schedule but cant compete for the conference championship. They will move to the MVFC when their independence is over. Dixie State will likely replace them in the Big Sky.

Dixie State has a bit more in enrollment than UNA but was pretty horrible in D2 football over the past decade or more. But, they were a D2 outlier (RMAC) and have several FCS/FBS teams in Utah.

Several years ago, there was a push for the University of Utah to take over the Dixie State University campus. They would rename it Utah-St. George. Don't know if that is still being discussed.
