Happy Thanksgiving, Lions fans. As I sit here anxiously awaiting all the food to come, I am wishing we had some sort of game on the TV today. We do have a big (I would think?) game coming up Saturday. I’m a little surprised we aren’t already talking about this one...
I wasn't around when playing Troy was a thing, but we hate them a good deal, right? And yes I’m being sarcastic. I don’t quite understand why a podunk university in the middle of Nowhere, Alabama, has been D1 for 25+ years and we are just catching up, but here we are. Do we have a chance to win this one? We actually already have two common opponents, Pitt and St. Louis, and Troy State (I’m guessing they don’t like that name) lost to them by similar margins. They actually were beaten worse by Southern Miss, fwiw.
If if we could win this game and the two against the chickens, I’d just about consider this season a success no matter what else happens. Am I crazy?

Happy Thanksgiving, me and you are the same age, I remember a couple of games before they went D1. I remember my dad taking me to a game at Troy, when we got there, a couple of drunk guys, probably in their 40's with overalls on, no shirts underneath and only a couple of teeth between them, threw a whiskey bottle at me and my dad as we got out of his truck. The bottle struck the mirror and broke it. They kept cursing us (I was around 5 or 6). My dad finally found a cop, told him what happened and he said "What do you want me to do about it, yall probably shouldn't be here."
If you can find any old footage of the games between UNA, Troy and JSU, they were huge, packed houses. They were all true rivalries. Honestly for me, I disliked Troy and enjoyed JSU. It didn't really bother me that Troy moved, it has always bothered me that JSU did.

Though the truth is I don’t remember if I saw a basketball game against Troy it not. I’m pretty sure we went to some games during the ‘91 championship season, though I don’t remember who we played. I would’ve been 8 for those.

Troy has done their DI move right and benefitted in the late 90s/early 2000s by jumping on the globalization of education concept. They have branches on/near dozens of military bases and were leaders in distance learning before it became the norm.
I have a masters from Troy. They are more of the model, in my eyes, of how to move into DI.
The transition was much different back then, though. Troy was in the IAA playoffs in their third season and made the playoffs almost every year for a decade before moving to FBS.

No video for this game? Ugh. Yeah there doesn’t appear to be. I kept searching ESPN+, thinking I was going crazy. But Troy doesn’t list a TV option on their schedule, so there really must not be. Insert “but this is 2018!” comment here, I guess. We’re spoiled. Also, I guess the game was pushed back to 12:30? I’m not really in a position to listen to the radio, but game time is one listed as 12:30 ET? I thought it was supposed to be a noon (eastern) tip.

Our first matchup since 1991. Was that during our last national title season?

Well, frustrating outcome after the games against St. Louis and Pitt. Troy isn’t as good as either of them, so I thought we’d have a chance.
I just chalk it up to our youth. This probably won’t be the only “head-scratching” game we see this year.
