Today’s TimesDaily has a discussion on the future of the ECM hospital property, and its planned demolition. Apparently officials are hoping for it to return to residential property afterwards.
City, county look towards hospital demolition
Being that Florence is my hometown, even though I don’t live there, I care very much about its health and future. To me this is a prime piece of property adjacent to downtown. Just seems like it returning to residential property is a bit of a waste.
For a few years now I’ve dreamed UNA could buy the old hospital and develop a medical school campus. Obviously this depends on state help, and well... I suppose chances of that are slim. It’s a shame, because with a med school at USA in Mobile and UAB in Birmingham, UNA having north Alabama’s school would be a perfect fit. And let’s be honest, sooner or later it will probably happen in Huntsville if we don’t get it first. Anyway, this is probably a pipe dream, but I do wonder if it has even been considered.
If not for a med school, shouldn’t UNA at least consider buying it for expansion? The property isn’t really walkable from campus, but it isn’t exactly across town. What if we put a football stadium there? Again, not on campus, I know, but not too far and you already have a parking deck to work with (though I’m sure it would need some updating if not total reconstruction). If the football stadium can find a place on campus, maybe this could just be property for future student recreation, housing, dorms, etc.? With the campus being landlocked, this is one of the few chances for the university to purchase a significant amount of land anywhere close to the main campus.
Your thoughts?
