MARTIN, Tenn., – After dropping the opening set, the University of North Alabama volleyball team posted three straight victories to top host Tennessee-Martin 3-1 Saturday in an exhibition contest. Christina Ellwanger and Sophia Brandstetter combined for 25 kills and the Lions recorded 11 total team blocks in the 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 victory.
Both teams struggled at the net throughout the contest. The Skyhawks hit .382 in the opening frame before UNA began to find success with its block. UTM finished with a .152 team hitting percentage. After falling in the first set, the Lions raced out to an 11-5 lead in the second game. Madison Ruble had three blocks in the frame and UTM would get no closer than five down the stretch. Ellwanger and Malaisia Stallworth teamed up for a pair of blocks in the third set as the home team continued to struggle putting the ball away, hitting -.024 with just eight kills. Brandstetter, a freshman from Muehldorf, Germany, had five kills in the game. The Lions led wire to wire in the forth set to secure the win. A kill by Joise Maldonado and a service ace by Jayden Davila-McClary capped a 13-5 run to start the game and UNA never looked back. Brandstetter finished with 13 kills and nine digs to lead North Alabama. Ellwanger added 12 kills and eight digs. Davila-McClary turned in match-high totals in assists (24) and digs (16). Emma Ellis also recorded a double-double with 10 assist and 12 digs while Catie Ladner also posted a strong defensive showing on the day with 15 digs for the Lions. UNA will now turn its attention to the 2018 season opener next weekend at the Jax State Invitational. The Lions will play three matches on the campus of Jacksonville State, beginning with Little Rock at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. It will be the first official Division I contest for the UNA volleyball team. North Alabama will also face host JSU later Friday afternoon before wrapping up play Saturday against Mercer.
