Been thinking a little more about this. Is it safe to say that UNA has never fired a coach? I believe Coach Hyde was probably “asked” to retire back in the early 2000s. I’m drawing a blank on who we had before Bobby’s first stint, how did that end? Mickey Andrews was here for a while, but he left to coach in D1, right? Point being, this is either uncharted territory or at least territory we haven’t seen in ~40 years. I see a lot online about big name schools paying coaches’ buyouts with the help of boosters. I don’t know how true that is, or if it’s always true. But if it IS true, I wonder if we have alumni/boosters who are willing to do that. UNA has always had a Bama/Auburn problem, as in, the Lions are a lot of people’s “other” favorite team. Does JSU struggle with that? Troy? I ask because I legitimately wonder. To people with the kind of wealth to buy out coaching contracts, are there any who are big enough supporters of UNA to actually do it? Maybe I’m overthinking it. Wayne Grubb was the coach before Bobby Wallace. Don't know what happened with him. I thought that I read somewhere that there was a scandal involving him at UNA. Thanks. I remember the name, but I was a toddler when he was last on the sidelines for us.

His firing even made the New York Times in 1987. He was canned after having eligibility issues which led to forfeiting two fames. Guillot said that was just the “tip of the iceberg.” This was just two years after the Lions had appeared in the D2 title game out in Texas and then bid and won the hosting gig the following year. www.nytimes.com/1987/11/27/sports/sports-people-n-alabama-coach-out.html

Wild that it made the New York Times. I remember an article in NYT back in 2012 about Bobby coming back and the difference in recruiting between him and Terry Bowden. Both were quoted in the article.

Which means presumably no “buyout”, and means we really haven’t let anyone go strictly based on performance. Right? Not that that’s a reason to keep Willis, but it’s at least interesting.

I can’t imagine there’s much to “buy out” as we know he doesn’t make much compared to most D1 coaches. Did UNA “buy out” Champagne or was his contact up? You don’t really hear of buy outs much or at all at schools with FCS budgets.

Could Willis' be non-guaranteed? My assumption is firing him because of the lack of results would mean us paying what he's owed x number of years left. Now, maybe with assistants it's different? Could they maybe be working on a year-to-year basis? No real contract involved? I just honestly don't know. Of course, we're splitting hairs here. Keeping a coach who can't win more than 3 games per year will likely cost the university more in the long run due to the continued decline of any fan support and/or donations. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. If people in charge are too dense to see that, we need a lot more than a new coaching staff.
